The Indian Railways Management Service (IRMS) exam is an initiative by the Ministry of Railways to put together eight spheres of the Indian railways. It will be conducted to recruit candidates for these services. The recruitment was done through the UPSC (Union Public Services Commission) ESE (Engineering Services Examination) or IES (Indian Engineering Services) exam. According to the official notification, there are 508 vacancies this year. Candidates who are interested should apply for the IES or ESE exam.
According to the February 9 notification released by the Centre in the National Gazette, the IRMS will unify the 8 existing services of the national transporter, and create a new ‘Group A’ central service for railways recruitment. The following services will be merged: Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers, Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE), Indian Railway Stores Service (IRSS), Indian Railway Service of Signal Engineers (IRSSE), Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS), Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS) and Indian Railway Accounts Services (IRAS).
UPSC IES exam pattern
As already mentioned, the IRMS recruitment is done through the UPSC IES exam. The IES exam is done in 3 stages- Prelims exam, Mains exam, and interview round. The Prelims exam is a screening test, in which questions are of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). Candidates who qualify the Prelims exam will be shortlisted for the Stage 2 Mains exam. The Mains exam is descriptive in nature. Candidates qualifying the Mains exam will be called up for the Interview/ Personality Test. The final merit list will be prepared based on Stage 2 and 3 marks. Selected candidates will have to attend undergo a medical examination and document verification.
IRMS Recruitment process
The IRMS recruitment will be based on the IES exam marks. The minimum cut-off, eligibility, etc. will be announced in the official notification, which will be released soon. Candidates who are securing the minimum cut-off marks can apply for the IRMS recruitment for the posts of Mechanical Engineers, Civil Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Electronics and Telecommunications Engineers.
