First-year engineering, medical and architecture students who cleared their entrance exam but are struggling with college fees have a little under two months to apply for one of the more generous private scholarships open in India right now. The SDEF India Scholarship 2026-27, run by the Swami Dayanand Education Foundation, is accepting applications until October 31, 2026, and offers up to ₹2,00,000 over four years — ₹50,000 a year, renewable.
Between 100 and 150 scholarships are awarded across India every year under the programme. Applications opened on August 15, 2026, results are expected in mid-November, and money starts reaching selected students’ colleges from January 2027.
Below is everything a student needs before opening the form — the exact marks and rank cutoffs, the income limit, the document checklist, and, importantly, the slab table that decides how much you will actually receive. Not every selected scholar gets ₹50,000.

Who Can Apply for the SDEF Scholarship 2026-27
SDEF requires applicants to meet every one of the following conditions. Missing even one makes an application ineligible, so check each line before you begin.
- You must be enrolling as a first-year, full-time undergraduate student in an eligible professional degree programme in India for the 2026-27 academic year.
- You must have scored a minimum of 80% marks (or the equivalent CGPA) in the Class 12 board examination.
- You must meet the entrance exam cutoff that applies to your programme, where one applies.
- Your total annual family income must be ₹12,00,000 or less, counting all sources.
- You must be able to provide complete, accurate information along with all required supporting documents.
- You must be willing to take part in the online aptitude assessment and any further selection stages if shortlisted.
Who Is Not Eligible
SDEF has spelt out four categories of students who cannot apply. Reading this list first can save you a wasted application:
- Students already in the second year or later of an undergraduate programme.
- Students enrolled in a part-time undergraduate programme.
- Students who took a drop year or gap year after Class 12. This is a hard rule — repeaters who took a year off to prepare for JEE or NEET are not eligible, however good their rank.
- Applicants who do not meet the applicable academic, income, or entrance examination requirements.

The rank cutoffs are strict, and they are all-India ranks:

Students admitted through management quota or state counselling to one of these programmes can still fill the form — the application asks you to select your admission type — but where an entrance exam applies to the programme, the published cutoff has to be met.
How Much Will You Actually Get? The Award Slab Table
This is the part most students miss. ₹50,000 is the maximum, not the standard award. The amount you receive falls somewhere in the ₹20,000 to ₹50,000 range, and SDEF calculates it from two things: your entrance exam rank and your average of Class 10 and Class 12 percentage.

So the full ₹50,000 a year goes only to students with an all-India rank under 5,000 and a Class 10-12 average above 95%. A student with a JEE Main rank of 28,000 and an 86% average would be looking at ₹25,000 for the year.
One thing to note: eligibility extends up to AIR 50,000, but the published slab table stops at “rank under 40,000”. If your rank falls between 40,000 and 50,000, you still meet the eligibility bar — write to SDEF at the email address below to confirm your award band before you assume anything.
Documents You Need to Keep Ready
The form asks for twelve uploads. Scanning all of these before you start is the single biggest time-saver, because SDEF also warns that unclear or unreadable documents mean an incomplete application, and incomplete applications are not reviewed.

Depending on your circumstances you may also need agricultural land documents, education loan papers, an ITR, salary slip or salary certificate, or pension proof. SDEF says it may ask for additional documents to verify the financial information in your application.

SDEF has said plainly that it is not able to make exceptions to the published deadline, so there is no point counting on an extension. The form does let you save your progress and return to it later, which is the sensible way to handle twelve document uploads.
Selection Process: What Happens After You Apply
Selection runs in four stages:
- Application review by SDEF Scholarship Administrators.
- Document verification.
- Online assessment for shortlisted candidates. You will need a laptop or desktop and a reliable internet connection; SDEF says a nearby cyber cafe or computer centre may be used if you do not have this at home.
- Personal interview, if shortlisted.
A warning worth taking seriously: SDEF treats plagiarism, false information, fabricated documents and undisclosed AI-generated responses as grounds for disqualification. Every answer in the application has to be your own work. Submitting more than one application can also lead to disqualification.
The Money Goes to Your College, Not Your Bank Account
This is an important expectation to set. Scholarship funds are disbursed once a year, directly into your college or university account, and must be applied toward approved educational expenses. SDEF states clearly that funds are not disbursed into personal bank accounts. Students hoping to use the award for hostel, travel or coaching costs paid outside the institution should plan accordingly.
Renewal Is Not Automatic
The scholarship runs for up to four years, but SDEF reviews every scholar’s academic progress and continued eligibility each year before approving renewal. To keep it, a scholar must:
- Remain enrolled full-time in the eligible undergraduate programme
- Have no academic backlogs and maintain satisfactory academic performance
- Complete the Scholarship Renewal Form each year
- Provide academic records and any other documents SDEF asks for
- Inform SDEF of any change in academic or financial circumstances
The scholarship can be discontinued partway through a degree if a scholar stops meeting these conditions or provides false or misleading information.
Preference for First-Generation Students, Women and Farming Families
SDEF says preference may be given to first-generation college students and to academically meritorious female students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The foundation also states that 30% of its awards are reserved for talented women under its girls’ scholarship initiative. These are factors considered during selection rather than separate eligibility requirements.
Students from agricultural families are explicitly welcome to apply, but must declare the family’s land holdings and attach supporting land documents.

Tips for a Stronger Application
- Make your numbers match. SDEF warns that mismatches between the fee structure you enter, your income proof and your fee receipts can affect your application. Fill the fee table from the actual receipts, not from memory.
- Write “NA” rather than leaving blanks. The form asks you to fill every field, including extracurricular activities, family-owned vehicles and housing details.
- Answer the eligibility screen honestly. The first section asks about your gap year, first-year admission and laptop or internet access — these decide whether you can continue at all.
- Do not wait for the last week. Twelve uploads, a signed pledge and a nine-section form is not a one-evening job, and there is no deadline extension.
About the Swami Dayanand Education Foundation
SDEF is a registered non-profit established by the Garg family in 2014, led by Ashutosh Garg, an engineer based in Sugar Land, Texas. SDEF Scholarship 2026-27 FAQs
Can I apply if I took a drop year for JEE or NEET?
No. SDEF states that a drop or gap year after Class 12 is not eligible for this programme, regardless of your rank.
Is BCA, B.Sc. IT or a general B.Sc. degree eligible?
The eligible programmes published by SDEF for 2026-27 are Engineering and Technology, MBBS, BDS, Nursing, Pharmacy, Architecture and Veterinary Science. Students in other professional courses should write to SDEF to confirm before applying.
My family income is just above ₹12 lakh. Can I still apply?
No. The income limit is a hard eligibility condition — total annual family income from all sources must be ₹12,00,000 or less.
Does meeting the eligibility criteria guarantee I will get the scholarship?
No. Eligibility only lets you apply. With 100 to 150 awards for the whole country, final selection weighs academic merit, financial need, the documents you submit, the authenticity of your application, and how you perform in the assessment and interview.
Can I submit more than one application?
No. Each applicant may submit only one application, and submitting more than one may lead to disqualification.
