On August 21, 2018, a historical decision might be made. As per the newspaper reports the idea of scrapping JEE Advanced examination is to be discussed at the IIT council meeting scheduled on August 21, 2018. Along with taking down JEE Advanced exam, there are also talks on scrapping the IIT flagship B.Tech courses and converting IITs into high-end institutes that offer post-graduate education and only certain semesters of teaching to nearly 80,000 students a year instead of the current 10,000 plus. However, how much is this idea feasible is yet not clear, this will be only possible after the IIT council meeting.
This idea has come from some eminent faculty members of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). This idea is aimed at checking the multi-million IIT coaching industry and to take IIT-level teaching to more students, as per various reports.
Qualifying JEE Advanced and taking admission in IIT B.Tech courses are considered almost a sacred deal. However, puts a bit of more pressure on some candidates. Thus, the idea further suggests that admission in IIt can be based on JEE Main scores only. The top candidates of JEE Main can be admitted to the IITs without any further tests or interviews. Also, the idea adds that the JEE main results should classify all candidates into 10 groups based on marks range with all students in one range (say 80%-90%) treated as equal.
IITs are basically working towards transforming themselves into high-end education provider of the nation and this idea is in that regard. Now, as per this idea, the B.tech programme at IITs is to be changed with one semester IIT experience.
Admission to this semester-long experience into IITs will be for the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th semesters of the B Tech programme (i.e., for the third and fourth year) and will be based on the performance in an examination based on NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning).
Students will enroll in this one semester IIT experience, will get degrees issued by their universities which explicitly mention the IIT semester experience. Such students will also get a preferential admission into IITs to do an M.Tech degree, given that they complete their bachelor’s degree with high marks.
What are your opinions – Is this idea feasible? Let us know what are your thoughts on this in the comment section below.
At least some are becoming engineers, once the IIT gates are closed we will have 150 crore ‘engineers’. And how from amongst group of equals will be nominated some for IIT, that’s really funny principle to make unequal as equal and again divide them into unequal. Great INDIA.
Oh yes! I would love it. You know it would be fair cause more than 90% of the selections made are by the students taking coaching from specific institutes for JEE which most of the students can’t afford. And coaching institutes like Allen have about 1.25lac students studying in theot institute and I guess they charge about 1.25lac from each student (approximately) so you know it’s a 500million$ business every year.
What a pathetic proposal..Some person who has not done his graduation from IIT or who failed to get a seat at IIT must have proposed this idea. Such a move would be hugely criticized and the entire blame of killing the beautiful institution will fall on the present govt.
The reputation of IITs have been so painstakingly built over a period of time with enormous efforts by various individuals. IITs are known to the world as best undergraduate institutes and even many graduates from IITs don’t pursue their MTech or doctorates from IITs, but move to more reputed Western institutes/colleges. You should only Strive to build on the foundation that has been laid and not abandon the foundation and concentrate on the top floor instead. Building would crumble miserably.
I don’t find any wrong with the coaching institutes and it is like the tutions that students have for various lower level classes as well. Since it generates income for these institutes some frustrated fellow wanted to kill it. Why? If you can see, these coaching institutes have excellent teachers and many are graduates from IIT themselves. You just cannot dream such faculty at school level. Which school will afford to hire such faculty. When you want good teachers, you need to pay for it. Further, in schools all kind of students study and many may not have the inclination to go deep in science and maths. It is not possible to teach higher knowledge to such kids whose interest lies elsewhere. Generally a teacher at school has to concentrate on all students and hence the overall quality will always be mediocre. But a coaching institutes does not have any restrictions and it can club the best students together and impart the best knowledge to them.
India is winning medals at international science olympiads consistently . How? Do you think they got their Calibre from the schools. Definitely not. Most of the teachers from schools do not have the knowledge to even think or teach at this level. Every student who wins international accolades got their knowledge only from coaching institutes which have excellent teachers.
Shun this stupid idea and in a country where even the highest is obtained not by merit but by quota, these institutes are the only solace. Allow them to impart the highest to the students. Don’t poke your dirty nose into such a good thing
outstanding proposal!!!most of the students are pressurized to hell and yes IITs are a big deal but not that big as to create such a big hype over it .the admission should be the way it takes place in GATE .JEE Advanced was a crap with no basis why pressurise the students with immense pressure and the coaching centre are simply corporate jungles drooling over our bank accounts. All the teachers are IITians .I wonder why should an IITian teach only to fill up his pocket and create a China of IITians in India. they should be scientists, entrepreneurs . Ithink this is a good idea.
I think that is a great idea to scrape JEE advanced exam. Its puts a lot of pressure on the students.Even after giving one exam, they have the tension about the other. It will be nice if they can combine all the efforts and put it down in one exam and one go.
However,one semester plan seems odd.
B.Tech from IITs have global acceptance now will this new degrees having written one sem from IIT have same acceptance??? Obviously ans is NO.
It’s completely foolish idea !!!!
JEE Advanced should be scrapped, because if it gets scrapped then students will get a lot of relief and they can focus more on other innovative things instead of putting their brain and energy on studying stuffs which will only make them eligible to get admitted in top colleges.
I think students should focus more on improving themselves in the field in which they are interested in, instead of wasting time on other rubbish things.
And now comes the matter of taking out the best students (aka THE CREAM) from the herd of like 16,00,000 students, they will automatically get filtered out when they will do miracles in the field of their interest.
Very bad idea, atleast IIT’s holds the Indian education standards that will also go by this idea.
most foolish idea by the people whose kids must have not been selected and supported by the people who know that their children will never make it to iits .These people want to bring all bright minded and dull children at the same level, mean gadhe ghore ek barabar.
Whatever be the entrance criteria Adv or mains … but IIT not conducting Btech programs is a damn insensitive idea !! There are lakhs who have taken a drop year just to realize the dream of getting into IIT … how can they play with dreams of people ?? Please convey this …
This will be akin to scrapping of Board exams for class X, which did more harm than good & ultimately had to be restarted.
Such important decisions should be taken only after due delibrations & discussions not in haste.
Changing everything in the end time ….. has been a trend in the iits and moreover scrapping the idea of advanced leaves us with idea of the toughness level of jee mains…..so basically mains is the do or die thing here ..but what always pinches me is that iit wants the best of all the seclected ones you can say ….so when you want that why dont to you remove this tag of AARAKSHAD from the test or does that even help you to get the best of students ….people who aint even able to cross general cut off are sitting in iit bombay isnt that AMAZING!!…….now that leaves me with the question of is it a fair judgement of students…is iit doing fair to itself by selecting the reserved rather than the DESERVED????!????
Sir I am Shantavirappa S trigule ,I got an admission for BE through TFWS(Tution fees warrier scheme)this is the only reason why I am acquring degree. There is still a hope for Higher studies .So please make a provision for student who are poor in economy but rich in studies.Make a separate criteria for selection of seat for higher studies with good marks and income below 50,000.
for iits to provide higher end education ,the basic change should be removal of reservation.
This is one of the worst ideas. Hence coaching institutes take a lot of money but they deserve that. We don’t have such a great faculties at school . And school can’t atford them. Indian students have been winning intenation science Olympiad because of such coaching institutes. At coaching institutes deep knowledge is provided not at schools most of the school teacher don’t know anything above the board level. Student found themselves proud to be IITians.
Pressure, there is also pressure on students for board examination so from this year you will end up board examination also?
Preparing of jee advanced gives students deep knowledge which is not provide by school.coaching institutes develops aur thinking skill in school most of the question are of same type. IIT provides a flagship level of btech course so it should not be ended up .
I Think this foolish idea must be given by one who doesn’t studied well in his jee days of preparation.(doesn’t have focused on coaching so he thinks that coaching institutes are of no use. And only looting is.)
