On August 21, 2018, a historical decision might be made. As per the newspaper reports the idea of scrapping JEE Advanced examination is to be discussed at the IIT council meeting scheduled on August 21, 2018. Along with taking down JEE Advanced exam, there are also talks on scrapping the IIT flagship B.Tech courses and converting IITs into high-end institutes that offer post-graduate education and only certain semesters of teaching to nearly 80,000 students a year instead of the current 10,000 plus. However, how much is this idea feasible is yet not clear, this will be only possible after the IIT council meeting.
This idea has come from some eminent faculty members of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). This idea is aimed at checking the multi-million IIT coaching industry and to take IIT-level teaching to more students, as per various reports.
Qualifying JEE Advanced and taking admission in IIT B.Tech courses are considered almost a sacred deal. However, puts a bit of more pressure on some candidates. Thus, the idea further suggests that admission in IIt can be based on JEE Main scores only. The top candidates of JEE Main can be admitted to the IITs without any further tests or interviews. Also, the idea adds that the JEE main results should classify all candidates into 10 groups based on marks range with all students in one range (say 80%-90%) treated as equal.
IITs are basically working towards transforming themselves into high-end education provider of the nation and this idea is in that regard. Now, as per this idea, the B.tech programme at IITs is to be changed with one semester IIT experience.
Admission to this semester-long experience into IITs will be for the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th semesters of the B Tech programme (i.e., for the third and fourth year) and will be based on the performance in an examination based on NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning).
Students will enroll in this one semester IIT experience, will get degrees issued by their universities which explicitly mention the IIT semester experience. Such students will also get a preferential admission into IITs to do an M.Tech degree, given that they complete their bachelor’s degree with high marks.
What are your opinions – Is this idea feasible? Let us know what are your thoughts on this in the comment section below.
Excellent idea. India is the only country in world where the education for getting into IIT starts from class Vl. The amount of toil a child goes thru and the sheer volume of study he/she goes thru is not worth it .that too in such mass numbers. Moreover, an average child does the same with so much of peer pressure and despite his best efforts is not able to get thru. We must try this new change. Something good will come out of it once we understand the entire intent and purpose.
Cancelling jee advanced incresingin seats to 80000 is not good for meritorious students. The standard of quality may be fallen. Before applying serious discussion required
The new proposed system of giving IIT experience to 80000 is a flawed idea as a student can not gain knowledge or become competent just by spending a semester in IIt. India will loose the 10000 competent engineers being produced now. The proposed 80000 will be of mediocre levels. IITs reputation will be demolished by such vague idea and great loss to India .
India Cricket team select 11 competent players not 110 mediocre ones.Just think

Really. .I appreciate this idea. ..it’s really very good idea. …..there are many students even in general category who are not so…rich to pay so…much amount to coaching institute for their iit jee preparation ……so…..it’s really very good ideas. See…. our nation always talk about equality everywhere. ….so. ..there should be equality in educational field also. …because. ..students are the new youths of our nation . Ours nation’s development totally depend upon our youths that is students. ……nd if we taught them about caste reservation or in other words we can say caste inequalities. …..so…how can we expect from them that when they grow up they will work for our country. …that is for people equally. ……..so….what I think and not only i there are many people who think that caste reservation system should remove from ours country. ….
We celebrate independence day. ….for freedom, for having equal rights to all people. ….but truth is that …that we are not giving equal rights to our youth …….then who can we expect from them that they will work for country’s people equally. ….
At last….I want to say that this decision is really good ….for the students and also for our country because students are the new hope for development of our country in coming years. ….so…this’ll decision is best one and I shoulder be implemented in jee 2019 exam ……….
Really poor this will lower the grade of iit which was earlier know for its quality. Govt. Is lowering the level of iit this will in future create more educated unemployed
I call BS on this.IITs are recognized only cause of the authenticity of the students who enter.Else there is no huge thing to IIT.So taking away advanced is killing what IITS are known for
It is very worst idea.Instead of 4 years a student can’t learn anything in one semester.I dia will lose all intelligent students and the opportunity to groom, train them.A knowledge less set of students will come with degrees still raising the number of unemployment of engineeres.
Scrapping of jee advanced and taking 80,000 students in IIT . Is it a joke? IIT was a dream, a legacy for students like me. Being one of the 10,000 top students and defeating the rest 1,90,000 to get to IIT was that mattered to us . A proof of our excellence and exception was jee advanced. And now scrapping out advanced.
Then what is the difference in IIT and NIT’s. Just nothing.
You are not creating excellence but taking back the expertise from those who deserved it.
After this the Indian education system for engineering will be just a sideline market of engineering just like the private colleges are now.
This idea is just a crap…
IITs are one of the best institutions all over India but still we are not getting top rates all over the world. If at all this would be degraded then the values of Indian education system will be much more miserably deduced.
However IITs system is one of the most important system for Indian students. Many foreign companies will also be not coming to India for any job offering.
World class companies will not come for establishing any of the companies.
If the problem is pressurising the students, then the govt. should change the education system from basic to increase the potential in the students so that they can come across without pressure.
But not scrapping out the JEE advance.
That’s really a crap and annoying idea to scrap JEE advance and make it in 1 semester.
IIT ‘S r for nurturing d engineering material & they r definitely not d factories of supplying d engineers as their product . Rather than scraping JEE ADVANCE it should be a practical test to find d passion of engineering in students . The current pattern of ADVANCE would definitely work for institutes like IISc,IMA,CMI,ISI ,IISER,NISER which r for pure sciences.Engineering & technology studies r d practical mode of education & student having passion for that should only be get chosen for.
It is a novel idea.
The rat race will stop.
The energy of our youths will find space to grow.
Coaching institutes do nothing good for education They. make our youths only a answering machine with prerecorded answers
The deteriorating results of JEE advanced are the key
I do not consider the extraordinary students as an exeption
Now a days private universities like BITS, VIT etc. are pro in to be more innovation and effsctive
Our elite institutes here IITs are able to admit 20% talent, 40% answering machines and 40% not deserving so called backwards
Scrapping of jee advance exam is not good. Secondly sudden rise in seat from 10000 to 80000 is worsening the quality of education. No doubt, the rise in seat as per increased population is must. It should be 20000 without diluting the existing pattern of education & syllabus. Secondly the young generation is quite brilliant than earlier. Hence need to give them the chance. Thirdly the body should have to consider the new world class syllabus & pattern so that Indian IIT’an must first preffered candidate.
I believe this to be a wrong move….. Coaching institutes are taking money for a good reason. The level of studies that they teach is not available in schools. So if you want to end the multi millionare coaching ecosystem in a sane manner, you need to improve school education. Infact, many school have already started doing this, and are integrating coaching into their school studies. And those of you saying that the students are facing a lot of pressure, I agree with you, but this is not the right way to decrease pressure. To decrease pressure, more institutes like IITs should be opened/newer IITs should be improved(which is happeneing, albeit slowly) and students should be educated that this exam is not the end of life and shouldn’t be taken in such a stressful manner.
Well I think that one semester might not be good idea because it will diminish its global recognition, but I am for that the mains should be the judgement criterion.
If you’re good nothing can hold you back from achieving high if you get under 100 rank in mains you’ll get to go in IIT directly
