The counselling process for the NEET PG 2021 has been put on hold. On Monday, the Central Government assured that the counselling process would not commence until the Supreme Court decides to challenge the 27% OBC reservation and 10% EWS category reservation for the All India Quota seats. The Court has now adjourned the plea hearing till November 16, 2021, due to Diwali vacations. Right after the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and Centre’s decision to provide reservations to the two categories, students have taken to Twitter and voiced their concerns.
A popular hashtag movement called ‘#reservationfreeneetpg’ has now started on Twitter using which candidates are voicing their discontent. If this reservation policy is introduced, then the UR category candidates will be at a loss as many of them will not be able to get a seat in the PG medical colleges. On the other hand, users have placed their opinion that the reservation policy would be an injustice to the doctors as postgraduate medical education should be based on merit and not reservations. This is because the medical field is meant for saving the lives of common people and hence, only merit should be counted to bring out the best medical professionals.
Due to this movement, people have started analyzing the future implications once the reservations get imposed. For instance, this user is calling out those people the resources and financial backing to move out of the country and get settled abroad. Moreover, with reservations being imposed everywhere, it is likely that the ‘situation’ will get worse with time. Hence, until the situation gets worsen, one should think about alternative means. Moreover, the user added that one of the primary reasons why NRIs do not return to the country is the quota system.
This has again led to the question of who the minorities are. As per this user, having reservations in the medical profession, especially for postgraduate medical courses will have serious problems. For instance, they are blaming that due to reservation, the country is not getting genuine and authentic doctors. Hence, as a possible alternative to not let this happen, the government should not impose reservations. The user further went on to claim that the reservation system will end up making the candidates of the general category a minority. Hence, various opinions and perspectives can now be seen behind this movement. While the number of tweets supporting the reservation policy is few, the social media site is inundated with posts that do not want this reservation to happen.
