Rajinder S Chauhan of Bennett University Writes About The New Age Medical Technology

Rajinder S Chauhan is the dean (Research and Consultancy) and head, Biotechnology at Bennett University writes about the changing trends in medical practice and the need for tech trained bio-based professionals.

“The Fourth Industrial Revolution is transforming health and medicine due to advances in genomics, synthetic biology, data science, AI, robotics, 3D printing, to name just a few, and all these cutting-edge technologies are directly impacting healthcare practice. The traditional medical professionals will have to be reskilled, which seems to be a daunting task.

Alternatively, bio-based professionals, trained in modern technologies who can diagnose, prescribe or even execute medical treatments need to be produced. The major advantage with these technological developments is that several diverse career avenues have opened up for students passing out with Biology in 10+2, who were otherwise restricted to applying for only an MBBS degree where the number of seats is limited. So far, the number of seats has been less than 10% of all the NEET appearing candidates in India. The time has come when our future doctor may not be human and that has been possible through the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in Medicine.

Another major technical advancement has been through genomics, due to which biotechnologists are prescribing and treating patients based on individual’s genetic make-up. The robot-assisted surgery market is also expected to grow exponentially in the coming years.

However, the question before most of the parents and children who are passing with Biology major has been to look for a career path which does not take 5-6 years and can be completed in 4 years while providing competition to the traditional MBBS course. The answer would be to take up BTech Biotechnology in institutions where engineering and applied sciences curricula are designed to inculcate skills and knowledge in modern cutting-edge technologies.

The Biotech program at Bennett University is supported through multidisciplinary faculty in robotics, 3D printing, AI, biomedical devices, etc. The practical skills of students are honed through project-based learning in high tech labs and supervised by faculty trained in reputed educational institutions.”
