JEE Advanced 2022 Eligibility Criteria

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has released an important public notice on jeeadv.ac.in, pertaining to the eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced 2022. This notice announces relaxed eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced 2022, as a one time measure. While the notice is clearly worded, two pages long, it has created speculations among students about a possible third attempt.

As per the notice, (1) students who passed class 12 in 2020 or 2021 and successfully registered for JEE Advanced 2021, but were absent for both Paper 1 and Paper 2, as well as (2) those who first appeared for class 12 in 2020 and appeared not more than once since then in JEE Advanced – they will be eligible for JEE Advanced 2022.

JEE Advanced 2022 – 3rd Attempt? Is there now a third attempt in exam?

The simple answer is no.

Here is the explanation of the notice

The JEE Advanced 2022 public notice on relaxed eligibility criteria mentions two sets of students –

Set 1: Those who passed Class 12 in 2020 or 2021 and successfully registered for JEE Advanced 2021, but were absent for both Paper 1 and Paper 2.

In case of Set 1 candidates, they have been directly permitted to appear for the JEE Advanced 2022 examination. However, to do so, they must register and pay the application fee, as and when IIT Bombay conducts the registration process. Such students will be considered in addition to and not as part of those students who qualify the JEE Main 2022 examination. Moreover, students who have passed the Class 12 exams before 2020 are not eligible to avail this one-time provision.

Set 2: Those who appeared and passed the Class 12 board exam (or its equivalent) in 2020.

Coming to the second set of candidates, they are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2022 examination provided they fulfill two important criteria – 1. They must have appeared for JEE Advanced exam only ONCE before (either in 2020 o 2021) or not have appeared even once for any paper before and 2. They must appear for the JEE Main 2022 examination and secure a position among the top 2,50,000 students (applicable for all categories).

Both sets of students have been allowed to appear for the JEE Advanced 2022 examination. But only as a one-time measure. This practice will not be applicable for subsequent sessions, unless IIT Bombay decides to retain this relaxation in eligibility criteria.

Looking at the public notice, it is clearly implied that no student will be allowed to appear for JEE Advanced examination more than two times. Hence, the notion of a possible third attempt for any student is not true. Only those candidates who fit into one the categories listed above will be allowed to appear for JEE Advanced 2022 in addition to those who qualify the first stage this year. Of course, such students must also fulfill other eligibility criteria, to be released soon once IIT Bombay releases the information brochure.
