GATE 2022 Negative Marking

IIT Kharagpur has released the answer key, question paper, and response sheet for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2022. While the response sheet was released few days after the exam, answer key and question papers for GATE released yesterday. To everyone’s surprise, IIT released it all under the GOAPS. Now that the official answer key and papers for GATE 2022 are out, candidates are looking for ways by which they can calculate a tentative score. Candidates can easily do so by adding marks for correct answers and by deducting marks for incorrect answers. However, to do so, one must know the marking scheme of GATE 2022.

GATE 2022 question paper contained MCQs, MSQs, and NAT type of questions. Under each of these category, 01 and 02 mark questions were asked. However, negative marking is only applicable for incorrect MCQ. For every incorrect 1 marks MCQ, negative marking of 1/3 marks will be done. Whereas, for every incorrect 2 mark question, 2/3 marks shall be deducted. For marking incorrect MSQ and NAT, no marks will be subtracted.

To Understand GATE Negative Marking Better, Refer to the Table Below:

Qs TypeMarks for Correct AnsNegative Marking
MCQ1 mark1/3 mark
MCQ2 mark2/3 mark
MSQ1 marknone
MSQ2 marknone
NAT1 marknone
NAT2 marknone

In other words, for every incorrect response, 0.33 marks will be deducted from a 01-mark MCQ. If it is a 02-mark MCQ, then 1.33 marks are going to be deducted.

MCQ stands for Multiple Choice Questions, MSQ for the Multiple Select Questions, and NAT for Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. In MCQs, there is only one correct answer option. On the other hand, in MSQs multiple answer options can be correct. Lastly, NAT question, the answer is a numerical value. Candidates should note that no partial credit is given for the responses in MSQs and NATs.

The rest of the marking scheme for GATE 2022 varies for each subject paper and it is as given below:

Using this pattern of marking, answer key, question paper, and response sheet candidates can calculate a tentative score. This shall be tentative raw score. The official GATE score, with AIR, and cut off will be declared on March 17, 2022. It will also be announced under the GOAPS and candidates can check it by entering the enrollment id / e-mail id and password.
