MCI Will Launch New MBBS Syllabus Next Month; New Syllabus To Be Effective From 2019 Session

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has decided to change the syllabus of bachelor’s degree programme in medicine which will come into effect from the 2019 session onwards. The new syllabus will be published next month. The syllabus is now ready and final proofreading is in progress. By September the brand new syllabus for the upcoming doctors of the nation will be made available. It is said that the new syllabus will focus on skill-based and hands-on training.

As per the reports, Dr. Reena Nayar, secretary of MCI confirms that the new syllabus is ready and will be available next month. She quotes:

The syllabus is ready and the final content is being proof-read. It will be published in September and introduced from the next academic session, as this year it will be difficult for colleges to adopt it.

She also adds that information on new diseases has been added in this new syllabus while irrelevant chapters not needed in general practice have now been removed. MCI has also started to train the teachers across the nation to be able to be thorough with the new syllabus and train the doctors of the future.

As per the reports, over the last six months, about 40,000 teachers have been identified by the medical education departments of several colleges for training. These teachers will further train their colleagues on how to handle the course material.

The process of revising the syllabus was going on since 2013. Now, after much delays, and after the approval of Union health ministry in December last year, the syllabus is now ready to be published in September 2018.

What are the changes?

The old syllabus was mostly theory, especially on anatomy, pathology, and physiology. However, the new syllabus tends to be focused on guidelines issued by the World Federation for Medical Education. The new syllabus will have more emphasis on skills and will have competency-based tests. In addition to that, the students will also be provided with early clinical exposure, right from the first year of the 4.5 years course plus an internship.

Candidates must not confuse the change in MBBS syllabus with changes in NEET 2019 syllabus. The entrance exam syllabus remains the same. MCI has announced changes in MBBS syllabus only.

Thus, the new syllabus is seeming to be more relevant with the current scenarios of the medical world. The MBBS aspirants of the nation who are looking forward to taking admission in MMBS courses must be ready to face a brand new curriculum.

2019 is truly a year of change in the higher education front. First, a new conducting body of some greatest entrance examinations of the nation was announced and now MCI announces changes in MBBS syllabus. However, all these changes seem to be promising and are towards the welfare of the candidates.

Candidates who will be taking admission in MBBS courses in 2019, will be mostly opting to appear in NEET 2019. Now, NEET being conducted by National Testing agency from 2019, is facing no changes in its syllabus or exam pattern. Just that the examination will be conducted in the online mode and twice a year.
