The enigma surrounding the GATE 2022 exam is now over with Supreme Court squashing the plea that asked for postponing the examination. A bench comprising of Justice DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant, and Vikram Nath today heard the petition filed by GATE aspirants. GATE 2022 examination is going to commence on February 05, 2022, and this decision is a relief for those who have prepared for the exam for a long time.
The petition was filed by a group of students who demanded deferring the examination citing the increase in the cases of a COVID-19 pandemic. After hearing the matter, the SC said that the decision of postponing the examination 48 hours before the examination could cause unrest and anxiety amongst the students. This plea was filed by advocate Pallavi Mongia who said that conducting GATE 2022 at this moment is completely obnoxious.
In his remark, the judge said, “This is replete with the potential for chaos and uncertainty in lights of students who’ve registered for the exam”. He further added that today is the 3rd of February, 2022, and postponing the exam would be the harbinger of anxiety and disruption amongst the students.
With this statement, the honorable court was trying to highlight that this judgment will be an injustice to those who have already completed their preparations and reached the exam city. The court is not supportive of anything that makes a mockery of a student’s career owing to the importance of the GATE examination. Although the plea has been postponed by the court now it has directed the final decision to the conducting body i.e. IIT Kharagpur who is the convenor of the examination this year.
IIT Kharagpur is all set to conduct the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering on February 05, 06, 12, and 13, 2022. After much delay, the admit card was released by the college for the registered candidates. However, after a section of students protested regarding the examination quoting partial lockdowns and restrictions in different parts of the country. The authorities issued a travel pass that could be used for smooth commutation to the examination.
