Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) has published a notice on Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2020 website, gate.iitd.ac.in today. It is hereby informed that candidates who had enrolled themselves for certification courses that are equivalent to BE, B.Tech, B.Arch, can also apply for GATE. There are two conditions to it.
First of all, only those candidates should meet all other eligibility criteria. Second condition is that the matter is dependent on court orders. Candidates interested in pursuing a masters degree and having certification from The Institution of Engineers (India) (IE), The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE), The Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI), The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers including Polymer and Environmental Group (IIChemE), The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), The Indian Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) can now apply in last few remaining days for GATE 2020 application form.
The notice published on GATE 2020 website reads, “candidate who registered after May 31, 2013 for certification equivalent to B.E./B.Tech/B.Arch from any of the professional societies (IE, ICE, IETE, AeSI, IIChemE, IIM, IIE, etc) but meets other eligibility criteria, are also eligible to apply for GATE 2020. However, as the matter is subjudice, the eligibility of such candidates is subjected to further orders of the court.”
In the information brochure for the exam released this year, section 4.1 on eligibility for GATE 2020 says, “The candidates who possess certification from any of the professional societies (IE, ICE, IETE, AeSI, IIChemE, IIM, IIE) and have enrolled on or before May 31, 2013 are also eligible to participate in GATE 2020. The candidates who have enrolled with these institutions after May 31, 2013 are not eligible, vide public notice (Advt No. P&AP/10(04)/2017). The advertisement can be found at aicte-india.org/content/public-notice-professional-bodiesinstitutes-impartingtechnical-education.”
The notice referred here is this:

So previously, only candidates who had enrolled before May 31, 2013 were eligible. Now those who had enrolled after May 31, 2013 are also eligible. Therefore all such candidates with certificates from above mentioned institutes are eligible. However the fate of the latter category will depend on the final verdict of the court.
The back story
MHRD had passed the responsibility of recognition of AMIE, AESI, IETE and other such organizations to AICTE from May 30, 2013. This means that all candidates who had enrolled in these places prior to that date are recognized everywhere as equal to BE/B.Tech. But those who did after, their recognition is dependent on whether or not AICTE declares these institutions as providing equivalent certificate. The matter is pending, and there is no final decision as of now.
In fact most of the PSUs that have released recruitment advertisements have also said that they will not consider AMIE and such institutions as equivalent to the UG engineering degree.
However this notice by IITD brings some relief to candidates enrolled in these institutions, at least for now. The last date to apply for GATE 2020 at GOAPS login, appsgate.iitd.ac.in,without late fee is tomorrow, September 26, 2019.
