Every NEET aspirant’s biggest dream is to secure an MBBS seat in a government medical college. But the most common question is: what NEET rank do you actually need? This guide breaks it down state-wise, category-wise, and quota-wise so you know exactly what to aim for.

Understanding NEET Admission: AIQ vs State Quota

Government medical college seats are divided into two quota types:

  • 15% All India Quota (AIQ) – Open to candidates from all states. Administered by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) through NEET-UG counselling at mcc.nic.in. More competitive.
  • 85% State Quota – Reserved for domicile/state candidates. Administered by individual state counselling authorities. Cutoffs are generally lower than AIQ and vary significantly by state.

Additionally, AIIMS and JIPMER have their own admission processes through their respective counselling systems but use NEET scores.

NEET Rank Required for Government Medical College: General Category (AIQ)

How NEET Counselling Works for Government Colleges

  1. Register at mcc.nic.in for AIQ counselling after NEET results.
  2. Fill choices of medical colleges and courses in order of preference.
  3. Seat allotment happens round-wise based on merit and preferences.
  4. Report to college with original documents within the stipulated time.
  5. State quota counselling runs separately — check your state’s counselling authority website.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What NEET rank is needed for a government medical college in India?

For the General category under 15% AIQ, a rank within 1 lakh is generally needed to get a government MBBS seat. Under state quota, the cutoff varies by state, with UP and Bihar having cutoffs up to rank 30,000–35,000 for General category.

Is AIIMS admission through NEET or a separate exam?

Since 2020, AIIMS admissions are entirely through NEET-UG. There is no separate AIIMS entrance exam. AIIMS seats are filled through the AIQ counselling process at mcc.nic.in based on NEET rank.

Can I get a government medical college with rank 50,000?

Yes, rank 50,000 (General category) has a good chance of getting a government MBBS seat in many states like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, MP, and Rajasthan under state quota. Under AIQ, the chances are lower but possible for reserved category candidates.

Which state has the lowest NEET cutoff for government MBBS?

States like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan tend to have higher cutoff ranks (meaning lower marks needed) compared to Delhi, AIIMS campuses, or Maharashtra due to a larger number of government seats relative to high-rank candidates staying in those states.

Is state quota or AIQ better for NEET counselling?

It depends on your rank and state. For many candidates, state quota offers better chances because competition is restricted to home state students. However, if you have a very high rank (top 1,000–2,000), AIQ gives access to top AIIMS and premier colleges across India.
