One of the most searched topics among NEET aspirants every year is: “What rank will I get for my NEET score?” This complete guide on NEET marks vs rank gives you a reliable answer using historical data from 2019 to 2025, along with category-wise rank analysis and a practical rank-to-college mapping.

How is NEET Rank Determined?

Unlike JEE Main, NEET does not use percentile normalisation. NEET rank is determined directly from the raw marks scored in the exam. All candidates who appear for NEET in the same year compete on the same question paper, so rank is a straightforward function of marks.

In case of a tie in marks, the following tiebreaker rules are applied by NTA in order:

  1. Higher marks in Biology
  2. Higher marks in Chemistry
  3. Fewer wrong answers (lower negative marking count)
  4. Age (older candidate gets preference)

NEET Marks vs Rank: Score to Rank Mapping Table

The following table is based on NEET result data from 2022 to 2025. The maximum marks in NEET is 720.

Marks (out of 720)Expected Rank Range (General)

Disclaimer: These are approximate ranges based on past year data. Actual rank depends on the total number of candidates and the difficulty level of the exam that year.

NEET Category-wise Qualifying Cutoff Marks (2019–2025)

The qualifying cutoff for NEET is the minimum marks required to be considered for MBBS/BDS admissions. Note that merely qualifying does not guarantee a seat; actual admission cutoffs at colleges are much higher.

CategoryQualifying PercentileCutoff Marks (2025 approx)
General / EWS50th percentile~137 marks
OBC / SC / ST40th percentile~107 marks
PwD (General)45th percentile~121 marks
PwD (SC/ST/OBC)40th percentile~107 marks

NEET Rank Required for MBBS in Government Medical College

Securing a seat in a government medical college is the dream of most NEET aspirants. Here is what rank you typically need:

College TypeGeneral Category Rank (AIR)Approximate Marks Required
AIIMS DelhiTop 50695+
AIIMS (Other)50–1,500660–694
JIPMER500–3,000650–675
Top Govt. Medical College (State)1,000–10,000600–650
Average Govt. Medical College10,000–50,000540–600
Govt. Medical College (15% AIQ)Up to ~1,00,000450+

NEET AIQ vs State Quota: Understanding Both Cutoffs

NEET admissions happen through two routes:

  • 15% All India Quota (AIQ) – Seats available to candidates from all states. More competitive. Managed by MCC (Medical Counselling Committee).
  • 85% State Quota – Reserved for candidates from that state. Cutoffs are usually lower and vary significantly by state.

For example, a candidate from UP with rank 40,000 may not get a government college seat in AIQ, but may get one under UP state quota. Check your state counselling authority for state quota cutoffs.

How to Improve Your NEET Score

  • NCERT Biology (Class 11 and 12) is the most important resource. Nearly 80–90% of Biology questions come directly from NCERT.
  • For Chemistry, give equal time to Physical, Organic, and Inorganic sections.
  • For Physics, focus on NCERT concepts and then move to numerical practice.
  • Attempt full-length mock tests regularly. Try free NEET mock tests at mocktest.aglasem.com.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What rank can I get with 600 marks in NEET?

With 600 marks in NEET, you can expect an approximate rank between 15,000 and 35,000 for General category, depending on the difficulty of the exam that year. This rank is competitive for government medical college seats in some states.

What is a good score in NEET?

A score of 620 or above is generally considered competitive for government medical college seats through AIQ. For AIIMS Delhi, you typically need 695+ marks. For private medical colleges, 500+ is usually sufficient to find options.

Can I get MBBS with 500 marks in NEET?

Yes, 500 marks can get you MBBS admission in private medical colleges and in some government college seats under state quota, depending on your state and category. It is unlikely to get a seat under 15% AIQ in top government colleges with 500 marks.

Does NEET use percentile like JEE Main?

No. NEET uses raw marks for ranking, not percentile. All candidates write the same paper, so there is no normalisation needed. Your rank is determined directly by your marks and the tiebreaker rules.

What is the NEET cutoff for SC and ST category?

SC and ST category candidates need to score at the 40th percentile to qualify NEET, which corresponds to approximately 107 marks. However, for actual college admission, the cutoff ranks are significantly higher, especially for government medical colleges.
