NIT Cutoff: Branch-wise Opening and Closing Ranks for Top NITs

After cracking JEE Main, the next critical step is understanding the NIT cutoff — the opening and closing ranks for each branch at different NITs. This guide provides a comprehensive, branch-wise and NIT-wise cutoff analysis based on JoSAA data from 2022 to 2025, helping you make the best college and branch choice.

What is NIT Cutoff?

NIT cutoff refers to the opening and closing ranks released by JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) after each round of counselling. These ranks indicate the best and worst rank that received a seat in a particular branch at an NIT in a given round.

  • Opening Rank – The best (lowest) rank to receive a seat in that branch in that round.
  • Closing Rank – The worst (highest) rank that received a seat. This is what most students use to gauge their chances.

Cutoffs are released separately for Home State (HS) and Other State (OS) quotas, and vary by category (General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS, PwD).

Top NITs and Their CSE Closing Ranks (General, OS Quota) – 2024–2025

NITCSE Closing Rank (General, OS)Location
NIT Trichy~2,000 – 3,500Tamil Nadu
NIT Warangal~2,500 – 4,000Telangana
NIT Surathkal (NITK)~3,000 – 5,000Karnataka
NIT Calicut~3,500 – 5,500Kerala
MNIT Jaipur~4,000 – 7,000Rajasthan
VNIT Nagpur~5,000 – 8,000Maharashtra
NIT Rourkela~4,500 – 7,500Odisha
MNNIT Allahabad~5,500 – 9,000Uttar Pradesh
NIT Kurukshetra~7,000 – 12,000Haryana
NIT Jalandhar~9,000 – 15,000Punjab
NIT Silchar~12,000 – 20,000Assam
NIT Agartala~18,000 – 30,000Tripura

Branch-wise NIT Cutoff Comparison (General Category, OS Quota)

Closing ranks vary significantly across branches. Here is a rough rank range comparison across branches at mid-tier NITs:

BranchClosing Rank Range (Mid-tier NITs, General OS)
Computer Science Engineering (CSE)3,000 – 25,000
Electronics & Communication (ECE)5,000 – 35,000
Electrical Engineering (EE)8,000 – 45,000
Mechanical Engineering (ME)10,000 – 60,000
Civil Engineering15,000 – 80,000
Chemical Engineering15,000 – 70,000
Metallurgical Engineering25,000 – 1,00,000

Home State (HS) vs Other State (OS) Quota: Key Difference

Each NIT reserves 50% seats for candidates from its home state (HS quota) and 50% for candidates from other states (OS quota). HS closing ranks are generally higher (meaning more relaxed) than OS ranks, giving an advantage to home state candidates.

For example, at NIT Trichy (Tamil Nadu), a Tamil Nadu candidate benefits from the HS quota and may get admission at a rank up to 5,000–6,000, while an OS candidate at the same rank may not get in.

How to Use NIT Cutoff Data for JoSAA Choice Filling

  1. Know your JEE Main rank (CRL – Common Rank List) and category rank.
  2. Identify NITs where your rank falls within the closing rank range.
  3. Check both HS and OS quota cutoffs based on your home state.
  4. Fill choices in order of preference: reach colleges first, then safe choices.
  5. Monitor round-wise cutoffs during JoSAA counselling and upgrade choices if possible.

Refer to the JoSAA Counselling 2026 guide for the complete schedule and process. Also check the JEE Main Marks vs Rank analysis to confirm your rank estimate.

Tips for Getting Into Top NITs

  • Aim for 98+ percentile in JEE Main to be competitive for top NIT branches.
  • Consider branch flexibility — a better NIT with a non-CS branch often gives better placements than a lower NIT with CS.
  • Understand the HS/OS quota dynamic and use it to your advantage.
  • Practice with free JEE Main mock tests to push your rank higher.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Which NIT has the lowest cutoff?

NITs in the northeastern region and some newer NITs like NIT Agartala, NIT Manipur, and NIT Meghalaya tend to have the lowest closing ranks (highest cutoff rank numbers), meaning students with ranks beyond 30,000–50,000 can still get admission.

Is NIT Trichy better than NIT Warangal?

Both are top-tier NITs with excellent placements and faculty. NIT Trichy is generally ranked slightly higher in national rankings. The choice should depend on your branch preference, home state, and personal preferences for location.

What rank is needed for CSE in top 5 NITs?

For General category (OS quota), you typically need a rank under 5,000–6,000 to get CSE in one of the top 5 NITs (Trichy, Warangal, NITK, Calicut, Rourkela). For HS quota, the cutoff is more relaxed.

How many rounds does JoSAA counselling have for NIT seats?

JoSAA typically conducts 5–6 rounds of seat allotment. Cutoffs tend to relax slightly in later rounds as students who secured top college seats do not report. Keep monitoring round-wise opening and closing ranks throughout.

Can I get NIT with 95 percentile in JEE Main?

Yes. A 95 percentile typically translates to a rank of roughly 6,000–12,000 (depending on total candidates). This rank is competitive for several branches at mid-tier NITs like NIT Kurukshetra, NIT Jalandhar, MNNIT Allahabad, and similar colleges.
