The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education has postponed this years’ Class 10 and Class 12 board exams in the state. Also known as the Madhyamik (Class 10) and Higher Secondary (Class 12) exams in the state, both of these exams were earlier scheduled to be held in June 2021.
Bringing relief to lakhs of students who were worried how to manage board exams amidst the pandemic, the govt has finally taken the decision to postpone the exams. They conveyed the same via Press Trust of India.

However, it may be noted, that the exams have as of now only been postponed. They have not been cancelled. WBBSE is one of the few boards that is yet to cancel 10th exams; WBCHSE is one of the many who have not cancelled 12th exams.
On Saturday, officials of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) stated to the media that the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams of the Council cannot be held amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier, the Council cancelled the Class 11 annual exams in light of the pandemic and decided to promote all students without conducting any exam.
The West Bengal Class 10 Board exam 2021 (Madhyamik) was scheduled to be held from June 01 to 10, 2021. On the other hand, the Class 12 Board exam 2021 (Higher Secondary) was scheduled to be held from June 15, 2021. However, major media houses have quoted the chief secretary Alapan Banerjee stating that the exams can be conducted only when situations are more conducive to conduct exams in the state.
Candidates awaiting to appear in this year’s exam in West Bengal can rest assured that revised exam dates will be announced in advance as and when situations are more conducive. The official was quoted saying that revised exam dates of conducting the Class 10 and Class 12 board will be announced at least 2 weeks in advance.
PTI’s latest tweet has also confirmed the postponement of the West Bengal Class 10 and Class 12 board exams. The tweet reads “West Bengal board exams for Class 10, 12 will not be held in June, revised scheduled to be announced later: Official”. Candidates may however note that the board exams have not been cancelled. The exam dates have been indefinitely postponed due to the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state. However, as per reports, both the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams will be conducted later when the situations are more conducive.
Candidates are advised to keep visiting the official website of the West Bengal State Council of Higher Secondary Education regularly for further updates and announcements regarding the conduct of the examinations. The website is available at wbchse.nic.in. It may be noted that the West Bengal HS Education Board is not the first in the country to have postponed/cancelled exams. Recently, the Central Board of Secondary Education also cancelled the Class 10 board exams while a decision on the conduct of the postponed Class 12 board exams is awaited.
