The Aligarh Muslim University has found its place for the first time in the Shanghai ranking 2020. Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Tariq Mansoor tweeted earlier about the enormous feat achieved by the University. The Shanghai Ranking or the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2020 declares a list of the top 1000 institutions in the world on a yearly basis. In the 2020 ARWU global rankings, the AMU has found world ranking of 801-900 jointly with VIT Vellore.
A total of fifteen Indian institutes has found a place in the ARWU 2020 global rankings, also known as the Shanghai rankings. The AMU has been ranked at 8-9 position in India jointly with the VIT Vellore at the national level. Among Indian institutes, IISc Bangalore has topped the lists. The Institute has been positioned at 501-600 Global Rank. Next, the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras, Calcutta University and the University of Delhi has been positioned jointly at the world ranking 601-700. At the national level, these institutes has been jointly placed at 2-4.
Besides the aforementioned Indian institutes/universities, the Indian Institutes of Technology in Delhi and Kharagpur, along with JNU has been globally ranked at 701-800. These institutes/universities share a joint national rank of 5-7. AMU Aligarh and VIT Vellore appear in the list after these Indian Universities in the national context.
Some other Indian institutes/universities also feature in the ARWU 2020 global ranking of 1000 top academic institutions. These are the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Anna University, Bharathiar University, Indian Institutes of Technology in Kanpur and Roorkee and the Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER). These Indian institutes/universities have been jointly ranked at 10-15 at the national level. On the global level, the aforementioned institutes/universities has been ranked 901-1000.
Professor Mansoor tweeted “Excellent news for the entire AMU fraternity- AMU finds a place for 1st time in Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU 2020) topmost universities’ list. It’s a testament to our continued progress on all fronts, recognised at national and international levels“. He posted excerpts of the official document on Twitter on March 30, 2021.
On the global context, the top three positions as per the ARWU 2020 rankings are held by the Harvard University, Stanford University and the University of Cambridge respectively. Apart from the listed fifteen Indian Universities, no other Indian institute has found a place in the Shanghai Rankings 2020. The Indian Institute of Science has found the first position among the fifteen Indian institutes ranked in the ARWU 2020.
