Recently, Panjab University Association has decided to conduct a university level entrance exam for MA Economics admission for its 2019-20 academic session. Earlier, this prestigious private institution used to consider the marks secured in the qualifying exam of BA Economics. A minimum of 45% in Economics or 50% marks in BA/B Sc./B Com. was considered eligible to apply. Further, the University used to prepare a merit list and call all the selected candidates for a counseling round.
As per what has been proposed until now by the academics and economics department, it seems that the duration of this entrance will be 1 hour 30 minutes, having to attempt 75 MCQ type questions. Each of these questions shall carry 1 mark each, marking it a paper of 75 marks in all. The prescribes syllabus for this exam will be similar to that of BA honors economics/ BA honors (under CBCS scheme)/ economics (elective).
The questions asked will be from the topics, studied in the undergraduate level, namely microeconomics, macroeconomics, economic growth, Indian economy, development and planning, econometrics, applied economics, maths, and statistics, along with some logical reasoning questions. Also, the authorities have specified that a candidate is required to attempt 10 questions from each of these sections.
As hiring of externals to design the question paper will require the University to incur a lot of expenses, the esteemed faculty members of this Institute are expected to set the question paper for this exam. This move is said to increase transparency and fairness at the time of admission. Although, this is just a proposal which soon will be sent for the approval, which might go through a lot of modifications.
