The Ministry of Education has launched a new vertical for Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) under the Diksha platform for school education. The government has rightfully encountered the need for development in the quality of education at the earliest stages of learning i.e., from 0 to 8 years. The FLN tools and resources have been launched by the Education Minister through the Diksha platform under NIPUN Bharat. The FLN mission aims at assisting all the union territories and states in attaining FLN goals.

The FLN mission has been driven by scientific research backing up the fact that the number of schools and school-going children is not equivalent to the expertise in learning & understanding. India has made remarkable progress over the years in terms of pedagogy. With a total of 250 million children going to schools and over 9.2 million teachers. However, if the learning is not at par at the earliest levels of education, there is a strong chance of dropouts. Furthermore, without adequate FLN at the earlier levels of education, students tend to maintain a flat learning curve throughout their academic careers.
FLN targets a much light-hearted and cheerful method of education covering greater progressive learning from preschool to class three. FLN is outlined to disconnect every flat learning concept that we have been nurturing on and on. The tedious inability to catch more content after 3rd grade rises as children are then supposed to ‘read to learn’ and not ‘learn to read’. In due course, students fail to catch up and the learning gap keeps adding up. A sudden rise in the complexity level turns out to be much strenuous than ever. Students lose interest and the unpleasant undesired learning continues. FLN’s mission is to provide a comprehensive & integrated method of learning through stories, rhymes, local art, craft, music, play and other fun activities right from one’s initial learning stages.
FLN includes strong lifelong foundations from maintaining good health to one’s socio-emotional well-being. Foundational Learning and Numeracy is based on three development goals. These are as follows.
Children Maintain Good Health & Wellbeing – This parameter is fundamentally involved with the development of competencies of the learners associated with physical, socio-emotional and psychological health and wellbeing.
Children Become Effective Communicators – Children will be able to communicate orally and maintain meaningful connections with reading and writing. This goal fundamentally revolves around the reading to learn concepts.
Children Become Involved Learners and Connect With Their Immediate Environment – Children will be able to able to develop meaningful concepts from the world around them.
