The plan to nurture deserving and potential institutes in world-class centres of education, Government has come with the ‘Institute OF Eminence’ (IoE) Tag. In this direction, earlier, 6 institutes were selected and tagged as ‘Institute Of Eminence’. Now the committee that is responsible for identifying the institute has recommended names of 12 private and 12 government institutes that can be tagged as ‘Institute Of Eminence’.

The members of the committee are N Gopalaswami (Head), Guru Pritam Singh, Renu Khator of the University of Houston and Tarun Khanna of Harvard University.

The expert committee responsible is headed by former chief election commissioner N Gopalaswami. The committee is comprised of 4 members, including the head. The Modi government has recommended this committee to come up with the names of Institutes that have the potential to become world class Institutes by the Modi Government.

The 12 Private Universities that have been included in the second list of ‘Institute of Eminence’ are –  Krea University, Andhra Pradesh; Shiv Nadar University, Dadri; Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore; Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Bengaluru; Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi; Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Bhubaneswar; Azim Premji University, Bengaluru ; the Indian Institute for Human Settlements, Bengaluru; Indian Institute of Public Health, Gandhinagar; Ashoka University, Sonipat; OP Jindal Global University, Sonipat; and the Satya Bharati University in Haryana.

Now, the 12 government Universities that have been placed in the second list of ‘Institute of Eminence’ are – IIT-Madras, IIT-Kharagpur, Delhi University, Jadavpur University, Anna University, BHU, Tezpur University, Aligarh Muslim University, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Punjab University, Andhra University and the University of Hyderabad.

The first list had 6 recommended names. From the public sector, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, IIT-Delhi and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore were recommended while Jio Institute by Reliance Foundation, BITS Pilani, Manipal Academy of Higher Education were chosen from the private sector.

Thus in total, right now the expert committee has selected in all 30 institutes 15 from each government and private sector to be tagged as the ‘Institute Of Eminence’.

Apart from the ‘Institute Of Eminence’ tag, the committee has also suggested for a special tag category, say ‘institutions of excellence’ or a similar tag for recognising the institutes that perform tremendously in the different sectors.

In such categories, the committee recommends, institutes like Delhi’s Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Punjab Agriculture University (PAU), Ludhiana can be included for excellence in the agricultural sectors.

Similarly, the committee also recommended Indian Institutes of Management (IIM)-Ahmedabad and Kolkata, for outstanding sectoral institutions in management studies.

As per the sources, the committee, while submitting the second list has also cited their reasons for the selection. They have kept in mind the management, kind of research undertaken, and also the financial resources while making its recommendations. For making recommendations under the greenfield projects, the key aspect that was considered was the availability of land. Jio Institute by Reliance Foundation is under the greenfield projects.

This proposal was to be discussed on Monday in the UGC meet. However, due to lack of time and lot of other “internal issues” that were to be discussed at the meet, UGC as of now has postponed the discussion until their next meet. Thus, the decision regarding the recommended ‘Institute Of Eminence’ Tag is now held back.

The recommended list of 30 institutes was a surprise at the meeting, as the agenda was to select 20 institutes for the ‘Institute Of Eminence’ Tag. Now any decision regarding this has been held back until the next UGC meet, which is yet to be scheduled.
