NIOS is a national board where students can get formal education without attending classes. Its aim has been to promote education to such places where students have been shying away from education for lack of resources. However, its ambit has increased manifolds since several education seekers, from various backgrounds have enrolled in its courses to pursue learning.

Admission at NIOS is hundred percent online. Candidates can either register online directly, or they can visit nearest study centre / facilitation centre and take help for online registration, or visit regional centre for online registration. To enroll in its secondary course, candidate should be class VIII passed having certificate of class viii passed, or self certificate (as mentioned atthe back of admission form). For Senior secondary courses, candidate should have copy of the certificate of the secondary examination passed from a recognized board of secondary education duly attested by a gazetted officer.

Recently, NIOS and its students have been embroiled in NEET 2018 controversy wherein MCI prohibited NIOS students, as well as all other open school students from appearing in the largest medical entrance exam in India. Delhi High Court’s interim relief has now allowed them to apply. However final hearing is in April.
