Motivation is temporary. Discipline is permanent – words reiterated by a famous Indian Entrepreneur Ronnie Screwala, and it holds true no matter what the goal in life is. Whether to get into a prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) or to become a neurosurgeon. Even if it is just to finish the daily academic to-do list, discipline is the game-changer. Motivation on the other hand, just helps one begin his/her journey to reach a goal. Here are 7 reasons proving how discipline is here to stay while motivation can vanish within a minute.
#1 Motivation alone, is not reliable. It is short-lived and unpredictable.
In fact, waiting for motivation is pointless as it is something that is out of one’s control. However, discipline is a value that one can manifest and sustain in order to achieve the desired results. So, rather than running around motivation, choose discipline and try to sustain it.
#2 Motivation is merely an emotional response stimulated by an encouraging speech, film or words.
Interestingly, motivation is a gush of emotions arising in response to a speech given by a person. One gets motivated while watching various workout videos. Or, a student gets motivated by hearing about the topper’s struggles and efforts.
#3 While motivation ignites the fire inside, discipline sustains it till the very end.
While motivation is short-lived, it is still an essential aspect of one’s life. The initial drive to start something comes from motivation. However, discipline is the fuel that helps a person achieve the final output. That’s the main difference between these two values.
#4 Discipline encourages the other two D’s – Determination and Dedication.
To be successful in life, a person needs to imbibe the 3 D’s – Discipline, Determination, and Dedication. However, a lesser-known fact is that discipline helps one remain determined and dedicated.
#5 For achieving a goal in life, consistency is the key. And discipline drives this consistency.
For example, a NEET aspirant wants to get into a good, government-recognized institute. He/she needs to study to achieve this goal. But more than hard work, there should be consistency in his/her efforts. rather than completing 2 chapters today and 0 chapter tomorrow, the candidate must aim to finish one chapter a day. This consistency in efforts comes with discipline.
#6 While motivation ignites the fire inside, discipline sustains it till the very end.
A motivated man sets a particular goal to achieve. But within the next few days, this motivation extinguishes. He must now find another motivator to keep him going. However, that’s not the case with discipline. Once imbibed, it becomes a habit and as the saying goes, habits die hard!
#7 Finally, the discipline acquired over a period of time might just keep someone going (or motivated!)
When an IIT JEE aspirant consistently works hard for 7 months, he finds the motivation to keep this going before the exam. This clearly implies that discipline is an indirect creator of motivation.
