JEE Main Only For IIT Admissions And No More JEE Advanced – Decision On August 21

IIT Council is the top decision-making body for the Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs). On August 21, 2018, this council is up for a big discussion. There are several proposals that will be discussed. However, the biggest one which is coming up is the scrapping of JEE Advanced and only using JEE Main as admission tests for IIT admissions. The other proposal which is second in line is that allowing students to choose the IIT campus of their choice during admissions but not the course. Now, are these ideas feasible? Changing the entire scenario of the IIT intakes – this is going to take a lot of brainstorming and analysis on the behalf of the IIT council.

The decisions will not be easy and will take much much time in the coming future to be implemented if the IIT council finds these ideas feasible. The IIT Council is headed by the human resource development minister.

Proposal 1: Scrapping the advanced test under the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), passing which is a prerequisite for admission to the 23 IITs.

Proposal 2: A student will be allowed to choose the campus of his or her choice and not the course at the time of seeking admission. This proposal has been submitted to the MHRD by two different IITs.

What do these proposals suggest?

This proposal suggests the following –

Point 1: Scrapping JEE Advanced and making JEE Main the sole examination for admission IITs.

This is a huge one. The logic is to introduce a one test admission system. There will be no second level test or interview. Only one uniform test for all the competing candidates. This idea aims at taking off pressures from the candidates.

Point 2: Restructuring JEE Main as one sole admission test.

Under this, it has been proposed that in JEE Main no ranks will be given to the candidates. Candidates will be grouped. For example, candidates securing 80 to 90 per cent of marks will be grouped as one and treated as equals. Similarly, a structure will be introduced. Out of the top groups, candidates will be eligible for admission in the IITs.

Point 3: Admissions.

Two of the IITs, which are yet not identified, have submitted this proposal to allow the students to choose the IIT campus of their choice but not the course.

What these proposals tend to solve?

There is too much pressure for the candidates to take the board exam, then JEE Main and then again JEE Advanced. The high-end coaching centres are thus earning a lot of profit out of this which is morally wrong. Many believe that candidates who do not achieve the desired ranks are demotivated. Many are exhausted after extensive coaching and entrance exams. No ranks will ensure those hardworking candidates are treated as equals in their engineering campuses.

A few of the IITs have already opposed the idea, saying that allowing the candidates to choose the campus and not the course is unfair. They believe that students will opt for the older, more established IITs if given a choice.

It has also been noted that each year, as many as 10 lakh students go through many years of preparation and extensive pressure, in order to achieve a fine selection of about 5,000 students, to the top IITs. This is highly unfair.

Summarising all the above proposal to make JEE Main a single examination for IIt admission and eliminating JEE Advanced is to relieve pressure off the candidates and to make the admission system as fair as possible. So the questions that arise are – Is it unfair right now? Is it a lot of pressure for the candidates who have been giving 2 examinations for IIT admissions till date? Will this increase or decrease the quality of future engineers? Well, all these will depend on an analysis of years of data and a lot of speculations.

Lets us hear you, do you think doing away with ranking in JEE Main and scrapping JEE Advanced will be beneficial. Are you with the change or against it? Do comment below and tell us.

Scrapping JEE Adv. will be great decision but their should be choice in selecting courses at the time of admission instead choosing campus.Do not agree with second proposal

I am not in for of this decision because their is a huge difference between level of Jee main and jee advance, if jee advance will be scrapped then some students those only eligible for NITs or other CFTIs they can be admitted to IITs.

Sir,iam a student ,iam preparing for jee IIT . And i have 62% on state. Could i get a admission on iit.ir i qualified jee adv?

Jee advance needed to check there ability and talent in subjects but not that much of result from jee main so unfair to remove jee advance

I think it’s correct Decision for a student who want to succeeded both in board and JEE . The student who really work hard but can’t pass in Advance will get disappointed and most think that they failed in their life . So it’s a goody goody decision.

It will spoil the quality of IITs..It will become normal engg college…and also our IITs international rank will be get down..its better to conduct seperate exams for NITs and IITs..

    1. Jee main only is good because the top scorers will get choice of IITs automatically. The couselling dates can be like first few days for 90-100% scorers of jee main than next few days counseling open for 80-90% scorers hence giving priority to better students first.
    2. Elimination of jee advance will not degrade quality of future engineers because in 99% cases the achievers are not assured intelligent because they start learning the concept from 6th class. To analyse, anyone who learn prepare for 7 long years can and achieve 340 score is actually poorer than the one who prepare for only 2 years and achieve 260 score. Coaching industry earn for jee advance more than only mains because mains is possible by self study.
3.Choice focussed on IIT but not course is illogocal as this can be solved while priority counselling system for higher scorers as mentioned in point one. Also, students who do not identify their passion of subject for career do cannot outperform easily. E.g. if X wants to study CSE but gets into IITB given a chance ending up compromising on ME than most likely X will either regret and do unwanted job for rest of life or not perform that outstanding resulting in invalid life happiness.

This is very good for scrapping jee advanced because it’s release pressure from the student as well as poor people also get benefit.

i m in support with this decisionnd people saying for jee adv nd talking of showing their abilities …plz stop being selfish there can be many circumstances due to brilliant can suffer during exams nd though he or she noe getting iit due to his rank is not fair nd all the ideas proposed are well n good

JEE Advanced is must to produce quality engineers

It will be disastrous if jee adv is scrapped. 2 level selection must for admission 2 top colleges. Moreover option 2 choose campus is a silly idea. What if all students opt for 4 major iits. What happens to rest of iits & nits. Seems like hrd ministry has become too brilliant now a days

all known that,,,but try to understand the feeling of other student ,,,who want to adnit in iit ,but not admitted due to high fee of advance preparation

Jee advanced is a different type of examination. It has the scope of testing the real abilities of a candidste. It should remain as it is. Jee mains is more like a T20 cricket match. It is not properly structured. Don’t change well tested schemes just on your whims.
