The Joint Entrance Examination Main (JEE Main) is to be conducted twice this year in April and May. The first session of the exam will commence on April 16 and conclude on April 21; the second session will be held from May 24 to May 29. Candidates who are present in the top 2,50,000 in the merit list are eligible for the JEE Advanced exam. According to the JEE Main information bulletin, the 75% criteria has been removed for the engineering exams. However, candidates should secure minimum 50% for the architecture paper.
The controversial 75% criteria
According to the NTA, the candidates should secure at least 75% marks in class 12 exams in order to be eligible for admissions to IITs. For SC/ ST candidates, the prescribed class 12 marks is minimum 65%. That is, if the candidates are eligible to get admissions to NITs, after attempting the JEE Main exam, or are eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced exam based on their JEE Main score, then they have to compulsorily satisfy this 75% eligibility criteria. This criterion was scrapped last year, due to the pandemic.
Earlier, no announcements regarding the 75% criteria were made. Candidates were worried and had requested that the 75% criteria be removed this year also. This will give the candidates better chances in getting admitted to the NITs and IIITs. But the recent news comes as a relief to these candidates. According to the official notification, a ‘one-time measure’ has been taken with regards to the 75% criteria, in light of the ongoing pandemic.
The new criteria
Candidates who have passed the class 12 or equivalent examination in 2020/ 2021 will now be able to attempt the JEE Advanced exam, provided they satisfy the following conditions:
- The candidate should have appeared for the JEE Advanced exam either in 2020 or 2021, but not in both. Candidates who have not appeared in either of these years are also eligible to apply.
- The candidate should have appeared for JEE Main 2022 and passed the cut-off (secured a rank less than 2,50,000).
These candidates will be considered as an addition to the JEE Advanced 2022 exam and not a part of it. However, the 50% criteria will be followed in the architecture exam.
JEE Advanced 2022
