Ministry of Education, Department of Higher Education, has recently shared data regarding NRI and management quota in professional and technical courses. As per the statement released, the Government of India has the provision to grant 05% reserved seats of the total sanctioned intake to the NRI students. Based on this, several NRI students take admissions in the Indian Universities mainly in the Kerala, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra and other states.
This statement was published in reply to the questions raised by Shri B. Lingaiah Yadav, Hon’ble Member of Parliament. He raised a question regarding the NRI and management quota implemented in the professional and technical courses during pre and post COVID-19 conditions. Shri B. Lingaiah Yadav also asked for the last three years data on this. Moreover, he also asked whether the facts stated as such is true – “neither the students who get admissions under this category nor their parents are NRIs and such less meritorious students, who can afford to bring more money, gets admission”. If this is the case, MP has asked for the relevant reason behind it as well.
Minister of Education, Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, lately answers starred questions no. 42 (to be answered on 04/02/2021). Answering these questions, he has said that candidates who do not belong to the NRI category are not eligible for NRI admissions. For NRI quota seats, only a person who is an NRI or is a son/daughter of NRI can seek admission. Else, NRI seats are not available for other students.
Also, it discusses that there is no provision in Central Government Funded institutions to grant admission under the management quota. AICTE Approval Process Handbook (APH) does not mention any such provision on admission under management quota. This policy exclusively comes under the respective state government. In the annexure available below, the Ministry has given an insight into the number of enrollment of students under the NRI quota in the last three years.
