National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) has cancelled the pending papers for class 10th and 12th examination 2020 considering the COVID-19 pandemic in the country and its unstoppable spread. The Board decided to conduct its postponed exams from July 17, 2020, however, it was further postponed till further notice which now stands cancelled. For declaring the NIOS 10th, 12th exam result, the board is coming up with a different marking system.
The notice says, “Consequent upon the prevailing pandemic situation in wake of COVID-19 pandemic, it has been decided that, conduct of March 2020 Secondary and Senior Secondary course Public examination re-scheduled to commence from July 17, 2020 and further postponed, now stands cancelled.”
Ministry of HRD broke this news on twitter and wrote, “Keeping in view of the health of the learners, #NIOS public #exams scheduled to be held in July 2020 now stands cancelled. The result will be declared based on the assessment scheme finalized by the competent committee of @nioswit.”

However, the students will be given a one-time facility to appear for the next public examination / on-demand examination in order to improve the scores. However, this is only possible if NIOS decides to conduct the examination when the situation is normal and conducive for the examinations to take place.
Besides the announcement of the cancellation of 10th and 12th pending examination, NIOS also devised a new assessment scheme for the calculation of the marks of the pending examinations. The result for NIOS 10th, 12th exam 2020 will be declared as per their previous performance. Those who passed four subjects will get an average of marks obtained in the best of three. Students who passed two tests will get the average of marks attained in the best of two. The complete assessment scheme for NIOS exam result 2020 has been explained here.
# For all the learners of class 10th and 12th who have passed (past performance) in the four subjects, the average marks of the best 3 performing subjects will be awarded as theory performance in the subjects for which the learner was registered to appear but the examination did not take place.
# For all the learners who have appeared in 3 subjects (past performance), the average of the marks in 2 best performing subjects will be awarded as theory performance in the subjects for which examination could not take place.
# For all the learners who have just passed in 1 or 2 subjects, their theory performance will be calculated as per the average performance in theory of the last 3 public examinations in those subject for which the learner was registered to appear but the exams could not take place.
# Those learners who were to appear first time and their Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA) or Practical marks are available, their performance shall be calculated as per the TMA and / or Practical marks viz-a-viz performance of the last 3 public examinations in the subjects for which the learner was registered to appear but the exam could not be held.
# It must be noted that TMA and / or practical marks secured by the students will be reflected with theory marks in the marks statement wherever needed.
As soon as the revised date sheet for NIOS 2020 was released, many outraged students wrote on their respective twitter accounts about the cancellation of NIOS exams. This decision came after CBSE and CISCE cancelled their pending board exams in the view of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. CISCE has already declared ICSE, ISC result 2020 successfully and CBSE is going to declare 10th, 12th result 2020 by July 15, 2020.
