JEE Main 2020 Exam Pattern changed

National Testing Agency has changed the exam pattern of JEE Main 2020. The number of questions, type of questions both have been modified. To start with, questions with numerical type answers have been introduced. Also, earlier there were simply two schemes, one for engineering and another for architecture aspirants. Whereas now there are three schemes, one for B.Tech, one for B.Arch, and one for B.Plan candidates. It is critical for students to note all the modifications listed below and be prepared for the new pattern before the exam.

JEE Main 2020 new exam pattern for B.Tech dictates that there will be three sections mathematics, physics, chemistry (no change in sections). There will be 25 questions in each section (earlier there used to be 30). The 25 questions will comprise of 20 MCQs and 5 questions with answer as numerical value (earlier there was no such classification).

The exam will be of three hours, as before. Joint Entrance Examination Mains for B.Tech will be computer based test, as before.

It is important to note that the concept of paper 1, paper 2 no longer exist as per the exam pattern change notification. Now the papers are described as JEE Main 2020 for BE / B.Tech, B.Arch, and B.Plan. However the syllabus, also released today, refers to the paper of BE/B.Tech as paper 1, and the B.Arch as well as B.Plan papers as paper 2. However, that will be another story to talk about.

The new exam pattern for JEE Main 2020 B.Arch exam is that there will be three parts I, II, III namely mathematics, aptitude test, drawing test (no change in parts). They will respectively have 25, 50, and 2 questions (earlier there were 30 questions in part I, 50 in part II, and 1 question with three parts in part III). Furthermore, the part I mathematics section questions are bifurcated among 20 MCQs and 5 questions with numerical value answers. The exam will be of three hours duration as before. And like earlier, the test will be computer based except drawing test that will be offline.

B.Planning exam will be separate, which is happening for the first time in the history of JEE mains. Its exam pattern is that it will also have three parts I, II, III that will be mathematics (just like in B.Arch), aptitude test (also like B.Arch), planning based questions. There will be 25 (20 MCQs, 5 questions with numerical answers), 50, and 25 questions respectively in these parts. This too will be a three hour long exam, in computer based test mode only.

NTA has indeed made major changes in the exam. Students may find it a little discomforting as they have been preparing for quite some time for the exam. However here it is worthy to note that the agency, and overall the education bodies, have been wanting to take measures to make exams unpredictable that will in turn disrupt the coaching focused preparation system in India.

How students react to the changes in JEE Main 2020 remain to be seen. For now, the changes should be shared with friends, and all other students one knows. The sooner students know and adapt to the changes prior to the exam, the better it will be for them.
