In a groundbreaking recognition of cross-cultural educational excellence, the City University of New York (CUNY) has established and named a research institute after prominent Indian educationist Dr. Achyuta Samanta. The “Achyuta Samanta India Initiative CUNY Crest Institute” (ASIICCI) was formally inaugurated Tuesday, marking the first time a U.S. research institution has been named after an Indian academic.
The ceremony, attended by distinguished American academicians and dignitaries, represents a significant milestone in Indo-American educational collaboration. The institute will serve as a dedicated research hub where American students can explore and study Odisha’s rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions, while also examining Dr. Samanta’s pioneering contributions to education and tribal community development.
A Vision Born from Personal Experience
The initiative originated from Dr. Milton Santiago, President of Bronx Community College under CUNY, following his transformative visit to Dr. Samanta’s educational institutions—KIIT and KISS—in Bhubaneswar. Deeply impressed by the innovative educational model and social impact he witnessed, Dr. Santiago proposed naming the new research institute after Dr. Samanta. The university board unanimously approved the proposal.
“The Achyuta Samanta India Initiative will help American students from diverse backgrounds understand and engage with India’s tribal communities, cultural roots, and one of the world’s most impactful educational models,” Dr. Santiago explained during the inauguration ceremony.
Recognition and Dedication
Dr. Samanta, who attended the ceremony as Dr. Santiago’s guest, expressed his profound gratitude for the unprecedented honor. He emphasized that this recognition extends beyond personal achievement, representing pride for the entire state of Odisha and the KIIT-KISS educational community.
“This honor belongs not just to me, but to the people of Odisha and our entire KIIT-KISS family,” Dr. Samanta stated, dedicating the recognition to his home state and educational institutions.
The ceremony also featured the presentation of CUNY’s highest distinction—the Presidential Medal—to Dr. Samanta, further cementing his status as a globally recognized educational leader.
