Mathematics Teachers’ Association organized the Pre Regional Mathematics Olympiad today, on August 11, 2019, from 10 am to 1 pm. Students have been given a carbon copy of their OMR answer sheets before they left the exam center, which they can match with the answer keys. Students are required to retain the OMR answer sheet until end of Mathematical Olympiad Programme 2019-2020 since the same is used for verification purposes.
Several coaching centres in India have either already released, or are releasing the answer keys of PRMO 2019 exam today itself. A few notable names are Resonance, Allen, Aakash. However the official answers will be uploaded on the MTA website, mtai.org.in, in a few days time.
Last time the exam was held on August 19 and answer key was published by Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education at olympiads.hbcse.tifr.res.in on August 23. If a similar timeline is followed, then the answer key this time is likely to be released by August 15. However since the re-scheduled exam is yet to be held, the centre may decide to publish answer keys for both dates (today and re-scheduled date) together, and hence there could be a delay in the answer key release.
To view answer keys provided by coaching centres, students can visit their websites such as aakash.ac.in, resonance.ac.in, allen.ac.in. Besides answers, these centres also provide question papers with solutions, video solutions, paper analysis, and selection predictor in their individual (unofficial) capacity.
The Pre-Regional Mathematics Olympiad contained 30 questions, to be solved in 3 hours. The answers had to be filled in machine correctable sheets. Each answer was a number with one or two digits.
On the basis of performance of students in this exam, top 300 students from classes 8, 9, 10, and 11, and the top 60 students of class 12 will be shortlisted to appear in the Regional Mathematics Olympiad exam. Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas have a nationwide coverage and hence the number to be selected from them is upto 5% from classes 8, 9, 10, 11, and up to 1% from class 12 of the number of registrations.
HBCSE takes care of all further processes of the Indian Mathematical Olympiad, after the PRMO exam. The official website to get its updates is olympiads.hbcse.tifr.res.in.
The exam has been re-scheduled in states of Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Maharashtra, Sikkim. It is also postponed in Bagalkot, Belagavi, Chikamangaluru, Dakshina Kannada, Dharwad, Hassan, Kodagu, Shivamogga, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Vijayapura regions of Karnataka. MTA (I) will announce new exam date for these regions in some time.
The body responsible for mathematical olympiad related activities in India is the National Board of Higher Mathematics. NBHM has, in turn, given the responsibility of conducting PRMO to the Mathematics Teachers’ Association of India. Results of PRMO are accepted by HBCSE for selection processes of IMO. Those who qualify PRMO can then appear in RMO. The Regional Mathematical Olympiad is held at a small number of centres in a region, and has descriptive questions. After RMO, students have to appear in INMO, held at 30 centres in India, and again as descriptive problems. Qualifying the same, students get to attend the IMO training camp where they attend lectures and problem solving session. Then they go through a pre-departure camp. Students who undergo all these stages, can then go for the International Olympiad, which is held at an international venue, and is a problem solving competition.
