JEE Main Registration Fee 2020 increased by 30% for inside India, and 50% for outside India students

As the JEE Main 2020 registration kickstarts today, here is a comparison of this year's and last year's fee. Bonus: comparison with older fee amount also given!

JEE Main Registration Fee 2020

National Testing Agency (NTA) has increased the registration fee for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains which is being held for admission to academic session 2020-2021. The new fee amount has been published in the JEE Main 2020 information bulletin which has been released today along with the application form. Fee amount is different for boys and girls, students in India and outside, category wise, and students who appear in one exam or more than one. 

Students who wish to appear in any one exam – either BE/B.Tech, or B.Arch, or B.Planning – have to pay following registration fee amounts: General, EWS, OBC boys in India have to pay Rs 650, girls in India have to pay Rs 325, boys outside India will pay Rs 3000, and girls outside India will pay Rs 1500. SC, ST, PWD, Transgender in India have to pay Rs 325, and those outside in India have to pay Rs 1500.

All students who wish to appear in more than one exam, be it two or three, have to pay the same fees. That, is students who will appear either in BE/BTech and B.Arch, or BE/BTech and B.Planning, or BE/BTech and B.Arch and B.Planning, or B.Arch and B.Planning. Registration fee for them is as follows: General, EWS, OBC boys in India have to pay Rs 1300, girls in India have to pay Rs 650, boys outside India will pay Rs 6000, and girls outside India will pay Rs 3000. SC, ST, PWD, Transgender in India have to pay Rs 650, and those outside in India have to pay Rs 3000.

Comparison with last year’s fee

In the year 2019, NTA took over the responsibilities of conducting the JEE Main exam from CBSE. in its introductory year, NTA had a different application fee structure. 

Last year, students who wanted to appear in any one exam – either BE/B.Tech, or B.Arch/B.Planning – had to pay the following registration fee amounts: General, OBC boys in India had to pay Rs 500, girls in India had to pay Rs 250, boys outside India had to pay Rs 2000, and girls outside India had to pay Rs 1000. SC, ST, PWD, Transgender in India had to pay Rs 250, and those outside of India had to pay Rs 1000.

Likewise, students who were going to appear in more than one exam – both BE/BTech and B.Arch/B.Planning – had to pay the following fee: General, OBC boys in India had to pay Rs 900, girls in India had to pay Rs 450, boys outside India had to pay Rs 3000, and girls outside India had to pay Rs 1500. SC, ST, PWD, Transgender in India had to pay Rs 450, and boys outside India had to pay Rs 1500, girls outside India had to pay Rs 1000.

Comparison with last to last year’s fee

It is relevant to note though that the fee amount in the year 2019 was comparable to the fee for computer based tests in years 2018 or 2017. In some cases, that is for some combinations of category and papers, the fee was actually lower.

In 2018 as well as 2017 years, the fee was as follows. 

To appear in any one exam, in pen and paper mode: General, OBC boys in India had to pay Rs 1000, girls had to pay Rs 500, boys in foreign country paid Rs 2500, girls in foreign country paid Rs 1250. SC, ST, PWD in India paid Rs 500 and those in foreign country paid Rs 1250. 

To appear in any one exam, in computer based test mode: General, OBC boys in India had to pay Rs 500, girls had to pay Rs 250, boys in foreign country paid Rs 2500, girls in foreign country paid Rs 1250. SC, ST, PWD in India paid Rs 250 and those in foreign country paid Rs 1250. 

Whereas to appear in both exams in pen and paper mode: General, OBC boys in India had to pay Rs 1800, girls had to pay Rs 900, boys in foreign country paid Rs 3800, girls in foreign country paid Rs 1900. SC, ST, PWD in India paid Rs 900 and those in foreign country paid Rs 1900. 

By the same token, to appear in both exams in computer based test mode: General, OBC in India had to pay Rs 650, those in foreign country paid Rs 1900.
