Under National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and Joint Admission Board (JAB) has decided to conduct Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main in more regional languages. Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal, announced the news today, on twitter. His tweet read, “In line with the vision of NEP2020, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) of JEE (Main) has decided t conduct the JEE (Main) examination in more regional languages of India”.
Until now, JEE Main exam was only held in 3 languages, which are Hindi, English, and Gujarati. Also, only those candidates could take the exam in Gujarati who used to opt for center in Gujarat.
Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal also added to the tweet thread that the exam will be held in the regional languages of all the states where admission in the colleges is based on JEE Main.
The aim to hold the national level engineering exam in more languages is to help students in understanding the question paper well. In one of his tweet, the MHRD minister explained that PM Modi pointed out that the top-scoring countries in PISA examination use mother tongue as a medium of instruction. This decision will help the students to comprehend questions better and score higher.
National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is already held in 11 languages and now JEE Main exam shall have questions translated into regional languages.
NEET, the national level medical entrance exam, is held in English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu.
The vision of the NEP 2020, based on which MHRD and JAB has taken this decision is all about the statement that is documented in NEP 2020, which is:
“Wherever possible, the medium of instruction until at least Grade 5, but preferably till Grade 8 and beyond, will be the home language / mother tongue / local language / regional language.”
Joint Entrance Examination Main is a national level entrance exam. It is held for admission of candidates in B.Tech, B.E, B.Arch, and B.Plan course. The exam is held twice a year, in the month of January and April. On the basis of JEE Main rank, candidates get admission in NITs, IIITs,and CFTIs. Apart from this, the exam also serves as eligibility for IIT JEE Advanced.
