Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal, announced the news today, on twitter. His tweet read, “In line with the vision of NEP2020, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) of JEE (Main) has decided t conduct the JEE (Main) examination in more regional languages of India”.

Until now, JEE Main exam was only held in 3 languages, which are Hindi, English, and Gujarati. Also, only those candidates could take the exam in Gujarati who used to opt for center in Gujarat.

Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal also added to the tweet thread that the exam will be held in the regional languages of all the states where admission in the colleges is based on JEE Main.

The examination will also be conducted in regional languages where entry to State Engineering Colleges is decided based on an examination (conducted in regional language). State language of States who admit students based on the #JEE(Main) will also be included under this.

The aim to hold the national level engineering exam in more languages is to help students in understanding the question paper well. In one of his tweet, the MHRD minister explained that PM Modi pointed out that the top-scoring countries in PISA examination use mother tongue as a medium of instruction. This decision will help the students to comprehend questions better and score higher.

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is already held in 11 languages and now JEE Main exam shall have questions translated into regional languages.

This decision has far-reaching implications as Hon'ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji has pointed out that top-scoring countries in PISA examination use mother tongue as a medium of instruction. The decision of JAB will help students comprehend questions better & score higher. @DG_NTA

NEET, the national level medical entrance exam, is held in English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu.

The vision of the NEP 2020, based on which MHRD and JAB has taken this decision is all about the statement that is documented in NEP 2020, which is:

“Wherever possible, the medium of instruction until at least Grade 5, but preferably till Grade 8 and beyond, will be the home language / mother tongue / local language / regional language.”
