B.Planning in JEE Main 2020

The new paper introduced by NTA in JEE Main 2020, B.Planning, is now the buzz of the town. What is B.Planning? Who should go for this course? What is the new entrance exam about? What happens after it? What is the scope and career prospects. These are some of the questions students have been asking since the National Testing Agency released application form for Joint Entrance Examination for admission to academic session 2020-21. Here, we answer these.

What is B.Planning?

B.Planning is a four year UG course, to be undertaken after 10+2. It deals with the knowledge of planning in small and large scales. Be it small cities or localities, or a complete state or region, a planner has to devise the plan of a place to ensure seamless integration of the various requirements of all who will inhabit the area. School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), the most renowned name in architecture and planning educational institutes in India, started the course in the year 1989.

What are the career prospects and scope?

After completing B.Planning, a student can go for M.Planning (higher education), or get a job as a planner. As a planner, one is involved in architectural conservation, environmental planning, planning of housing, landscape architecture, transport planning, urban design. Government agencies primarily hire those with background in planning to ensure that correct policies are implemented, and to find solutions to rural and urban problems.

What is the difference between Planning and Architecture?

In architecture, one is designing a structure. In planning, one has to plan a place. A planner needs to see what those within and without will require, impact on outside as well inside the area. In B.Planning, one is also exposed to a large degree to policies and implementation of the same. Planning is also, to a large extent, focused on how a policy or multiple policies impact socially and economically.

What is JEE Main 2020 B.Planning?

Technically speaking, B.Planning is not new to JEE Main exam. Until last year, B.Arch and B.Planning aspirants were clubbed; eligibility for both were same, exam for both were the same, and so on. However this year, NTA has created separate parameters starting from eligibility to exam pattern for the B.Planning aspirants. Now while selecting papers, a student can opt for only B.Planning, or B.Planning with B.Tech or B.Arch, or all three.

Who can go for B.Planning course through JEE Main 2020?

The JEE Main 2020 information bulletin says, “for B.Planning, the candidates should have passed qualifying examination with 50% marks in Mathematics and 50% marks in aggregate of the qualifying examination.”

Subject combination in class 12th, for B.Planning aspirants, requires Mathematics.

Therefore, the big news is that non-science students, with mathematics, can now apply for JEE Main 2020! B.Planning can be taken up by any student as long as he or she has Mathematics as a subject in class 12th!

What is the exam pattern for JEE Main 2020 B.Planning?

The B.Planning exam in JEE Main 2020 will be a completely computer based test. There will be three parts in the exam namely part I, II, and III. Part I will be mathematics, with 20 multiple choice questions, and 5 questions with numerical value answers. Then part II will be aptitude test, with 50 multiple choice questions. And part III will be planning based objective type MCQs with 25 multiple choice questions.

The MCQs as well as numerical value type questions will be of 4 marks each. Thus the part I will be of 100 marks, part II of 200 marks, and part III of 100 marks. Therefore overall paper will have 100 questions, of 400 marks. As far as negative marking is concerned, the MCQs will have negative marking of -1 for every incorrect answer; no negative marking for numerical value type questions.

What is the schedule of JEE Main 2020 B.Planning?

B.Planning will only be held in second shift that is from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm. However those who apply for B.Arch and B.Plan both will get the time slot 2.30 pm to 6 pm. Besides the timing, rest of the schedule is common for all candidates of JEE Main 2020.

The JEE Main 2020 registration has started today. Candidates can apply online until September 30, 2019, and pay fee until October 1, 2019. Application form correction will be available from October 11, 2019, to October 17, 2019. Thereafter admit card will be released on December 6, 2020. Exam will be held from January 6, 2020, to January 11, 2020. The result of all papers, including B.Planning will be announced by January 31, 2020.
