The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) will be conducted on February 5, 6, 12, and 13 by IIT Kharagpur. The exam will be held in two slots. Slot 1 is from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and Slot 2 is to be conducted from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The institute has released several guidelines and an instruction video to ensure candidates do not face any hurdles during the exam. Importantly, candidates are required to follow a dress code when appearing for the examination.
GATE 2022 Dress Code
Candidates are expected to wear a formal outfit for the exam day. Avoid clothes with too many pockets, as this might lead to unwanted suspicions. Candidates should not wear any ornaments, especially the ones made of metal. Also, wear simple footwear, as sometimes candidates who are wearing shoes are asked to take them off before entering the exam hall. Candidates are not allowed to wear their watches to the exam hall.
Male candidates should wear a formal outfit, that does not have too many pockets. Female candidates on the other hand, should wear a formal outfit as well. Overall, it would be best to go in simple attire, accompanied by a mask and gloves. There will be frisking, before allowing the candidates entry to the exam hall.
GATE exam day guidelines
Candidates should mandatorily carry their admit card and a valid photo ID proof to the exam hall. Candidates will be provided with a scribble pad to work out the questions. Candidates must write down their name and registration number on it. After the completion of the exam, the scribble pad is to be returned to the invigilator. Electronic devices, watches, and calculators are prohibited inside the exam hall. Candidates should not attempt to communicate with the other candidates during exam time. Also, owing to the COVID situation, candidates should strictly adhere to the COVID protocols and maintain social distancing. Candidates should cover their face with a mask and wear hand gloves throughout the exam.
The GATE exam is to be conducted as a Computer-Based Test (CBT), with a total of 65 questions to be covered in 3 hours. The exam consists of 2 sections- General Aptitude (GA) section and the subject-specific section. The GA section is common to all 29 papers. It consists of 10 questions with a maximum of 15 marks. The subject section consists of 55 questions and carries a total of 85 marks. There are 3 types of questions asked in the GATE exam- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. 1 mark MCQs have a negative marking of ⅓ mark and 2 mark MCQs have a negative marking of ⅔ mark. MSQ and NAT questions do not have any negative marking.
