IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology) are premier engineering institutes with a focus on IT and related fields. Seats at IIITs are allotted through JoSAA counselling based on JEE Main rank. This guide provides a complete, branch-wise IIIT cutoff analysis — covering all 26 IIITs — to help you plan your JoSAA choice filling.

Types of IIITs: ABFIs vs PPP IIITs

There are two types of IIITs in India:

  • Autonomous Bodies Funded by Government of India (ABFIs) – These are fully government-funded and include IIIT Allahabad, IIIT Hyderabad (does not participate in JoSAA), IIIT Delhi, IIIT Bangalore, etc. Higher quality, more competitive.
  • PPP (Public-Private Partnership) IIITs – These are funded jointly by Central government, state government, and industry. There are 20 PPP IIITs across India. Generally less competitive but quality varies.

Top IIIT Cutoffs: CSE Branch (General Category, OS Quota) – 2024–2025

IIIT Branch-wise Cutoff Comparison (General Category)

Within each IIIT, different branches have varying competitiveness. Here is a general ranking of branches by cutoff difficulty:

IIIT vs NIT: Which is Better?

This depends on the specific IIIT and NIT being compared:

  • Top ABFIs (IIIT Allahabad, Delhi, Bangalore) – Comparable to mid-tier NITs for CS/IT; strong industry connections, especially for IT sector.
  • PPP IIITs – Generally below top and mid-tier NITs in terms of placements and infrastructure, but improving steadily.
  • For CS/IT specifically – Top IIITs may offer better specialisation and industry exposure than NITs of similar ranking.
  • For other branches – NITs generally have broader programmes and better rankings across non-CS domains.

How to Use IIIT Cutoffs for JoSAA Choice Filling

  1. Identify IIITs where your CRL rank falls within the closing rank range.
  2. Decide whether you prefer an ABFI IIIT or a PPP IIIT based on your rank and priorities.
  3. Fill IIITs alongside NITs and GFTIs in your preference list; don’t limit choices to one institute type.
  4. Review NIT cutoffs alongside IIIT cutoffs for informed decision-making.
  5. Check the JoSAA Counselling 2026 guide for schedule and process.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Which IIIT has the lowest cutoff?

Among PPP IIITs, institutions like IIIT Nagpur, IIIT Manipur, IIIT Srirangam, and IIIT Una tend to have the lowest competitive cutoffs, with CSE closing ranks sometimes going beyond 25,000–40,000 for General category.

Is IIIT Allahabad better than NIT Warangal?

NIT Warangal is generally ranked higher overall due to broader programmes and research. However, for Computer Science and IT specialisations, IIIT Allahabad is comparable and some argue it has stronger CS placements in the IT sector specifically.

Do all IIITs participate in JoSAA?

Most IIITs participate in JoSAA. However, IIIT Hyderabad (IIITH) is a notable exception — it conducts its own entrance examination (UGEE) independently and does not participate in JoSAA counselling.

What rank is needed for IIIT Delhi CSE?

IIIT Delhi CSE (General, OS quota) typically has a closing rank around 2,000–4,000 in recent years. It is one of the most competitive IIITs due to its location in Delhi and strong placements in the tech sector.

Are PPP IIITs worth it?

PPP IIITs are worth it if you have a rank in the 10,000–30,000 range and want to pursue CS/IT. Quality varies significantly — IIITs in better-connected cities (Pune, Lucknow, Kota, Kancheepuram) tend to have better infrastructure and placement support than those in remote locations.
