A notification has been doing the rounds on social media as per which, West Bengal State University has announced the exam date of the West Bengal State Eligibility Test. It is reported that WB SET will be held on January 19, 2020. The exam date is given in a seemingly official notification numbered as WBSU/IC/All Affi Colleges/SET/408/19. Since the exam date falls in the next calendar year, thus instead of WB SET 2019, it can be referred as WB SET 2020.
It is further mentioned in the notification that registration will start on September 2, 2019. Official advertisement and detailed notification of the exam will also be published on the same date. Besides these two critical date, any other date or detail is not specified. However it is mentioned that exam timings will be from 9.30 am to 1 pm on the third Sunday of January next year.
The complete text of WB SET notification available online says – “This is to inform all concerned that the Twenty Second State Eligibility Test (22nd SET) for the post of Assistant professor in the colleges and universities of West Bengal is proposed to be held on 19th January (Sunday), 2020 from 9.30 am to 1.00 pm covering all districts of West Bengal. In view of the above the commission has requested the university / college / institution / commission to take necessary action so that the above mentioned examination date does not coincide with any other examination.”
It also says “The advertisement and online application for SET will be started from 2nd September 2019.”
It is pertinent to note that the notification does not state anywhere about who will conduct the exam. Candidates preparing for the exam are confused whether WBCSC or WBSU will organize the state eligibility test.
If the notification is true even then there is no clarity on a change in exam conducting body of WB SET. Last time the exam was held by WBCSC, West Bengal College Service Commission. The previous edition of the exam was held on December 20 last year. It was expected that WB SET 2019 will be held in December of this year as well, however it seems that the exam is being pushed by a month and directly the State Eligibility Test 2020 is being conducted.
WBCSC was founded in the year 1979. It is responsible for selecting and recommending assistant professors, librarians, principals to around 450 government aided colleges in West Bengal. The website of WBCSC, wbcsc.org.in says that one of the duties of the commission is to conduct the West Bengal State Eligibility Test.
West Bengal State Eligibility Test is the state level exam held to determine eligibility for assistant professorship. Anyone who wishes to become an assistant professor in universities and colleges of West Bengal need to clear this exam first. Masters degree holders with at least 55% marks, or 50% marks obtained SC, ST, OBC, PWD candidates can appear in the exam. There is no upper age limit for the State Eligibility Test whatsoever, however there be an age cap in colleges depending upon college’s individual recruitment rules.
Since the notification for WBCSC SET was released in the mid of August last year, thus SET aspirants had been enquiring about the WB SET 2019 for some time now. Even if the exam is not held in December 2019, as was looked forward to, a January 2020 exam date is also not too far.
