Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) is all set to launch the online applications for its graduate school admissions (GS) 2020 today, on October 24, 2019, at 3 pm. The online application form will be available at univ.tifr.res.in for all interested prospective applicants.
TIFR GS 2020 will be held on December 8, 2019. Whereas online applications will be available from today, the same will remain active until November 20, 2019. For GATE scores based applications to systems science, online form will open on February 5, 2020, and close two weeks post GATE results. Result of the exam will be announced by January 2020 end.
On the second Sunday in December, the exam will be held from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm for Physics, Chemistry, Computer & Systems Sciences, M.Sc. (Wildlife Biology & Conservation). Biology will be held from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm. Mathematics paper shall be held from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm.
To encourage participation from all corners of the nation, and to give a chance to all deserving candidates, the exam for admission will be held in a number of cities. The list includes Agartala, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhilai, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi, Guwahati, Haldwani, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Madurai, Mangalore, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Pune, Varanasi, Visakhapatnam.
TIFR offers M.Sc, PhD, and integrated MSc-PhD programs at Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad campuses. The subjects in which the courses are offered are mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, computer and systems sciences (including communications and applied probability), science education. The usual course duration is 5 years for PhD, 6 years for integrated MSc PhD.
TIFR will offer admission in all subjects except science education on the basis of online test followed by interviews of shortlisted candidates. Those who are shortlisted on the basis of TIFR GS 2020 will be called for interviews in Feb-Apr 2020.
The exam for Biology is also called Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS). ACTREC, Ashoka University, Bose Institute, CCMB, CDFD, IISER, IMSc, InStem, MSLS, NBRC, NCCS, NIBMG, NII, NISER, RCB, SINP, TIFR are all the institutes that use JGEEBILS scores.
The institute will also offer admission in physics, biology, chemistry, on the basis of GATE, NET, JEST scores in relevant subjects, and Ecology and Evolution GATE scores (NCBS only).
The educational qualification required varies from program to program. BA, B.Sc., BE, B.Tech degree holders can apply for the integrated PhD program in Mathematics. Whereas candidates not holding masters degree, admitted to PhD or integrated PhD can receive M.Sc in some subjects if they fulfill requirements. Applicants are expected to go through the eligibility criteria provided at univ.tifr.res.in before applying.
