Previously, the Union Ministry of India had set its target to increase the number of MBBS seats by 10,000 across the various Indian States, namely Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat, Punjab, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttrakhand, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Manipur. Which now seems not to be accomplished!
It has been 4 years since the authorities had given this statement and some states like Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, among many others have not been able to witness the rise in the number of MBBS seats. As per the data published by one of the national dailies, only Odisha (200 seats), Punjab (100 seats) and Gujarat (170 seats) have seen the progress in this sense!
The Commissioner of Medical Education, Sheo Shekhar Shukla says that the Union government is on its way to inspect the facilities available to increase the number of seats, probably this year. Although, the faculty related issues across these “to be built new government medical colleges” have already been dealt with by the authorities. If the Government approves their request, then by the end of this year, aspiring medical students will see a ray of hope in terms of the scope of this field getting widened. This move will also help the State to tackle the meagreness in terms of the number of doctors in each State.
