The Minister of Education (Government of India) Dharmendra Pradhan is all set to announce the National Institute of Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2021 ranking today, i.e. on September 09, 2021. The event for this important announcement is set to begin at 12 pm today in the webcast format on the official website of NIRF – nirfindia.org. Those interested in viewing this event can also do so on other platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. The ranking organisation NIRF will be releasing separate lists of top colleges in India, best medical colleges, top MBA institutes, top 25 universities as well as best engineering colleges.
In 2020, the number of Indian institutes registered with the NIRF increased by around 20% in comparison to 2019. A total of 3,800 educational institutes had participated in the NIRF ranking and were judged based on various parameters, including Research & Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLO), Peer Perception and Outreach and Inclusivity (OI).
Last year, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras topped the list of overall best colleges in India, while the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, ranked first in the list of top Indian universities. In the engineering stream, IIT Madras topped the list, while All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi acquired the first rank in the list of medical colleges. Similarly, in the field of management, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad acquired the top position.
In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NIRF rankings were announced through the online mode and the same trend has been followed in 2021 too. Furthermore, the seven prestigious IITs in the countries dominated the lists of top universities as well as best engineering colleges. This pattern has been going on for the past few years. Hence, it would not come as a surprise if the same trend is followed this year.
While IITs tend to dominate the NIRF rankings, there are other sought-after and renowned universities too, such as IISc Bangalore, AIIMS Delhi and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), which also feature in the rankings at top positions.
The most exciting competition for Rank No. 1 in the top Indian universities has to be between IIT Madras and IISc Bangalore. The former has achieved the first spot in the last two years, while the latter achieved Rank 1 in 2018. Will IIT Madras make a hat-trick this year or will IISc Bangalore make a comeback? We’ll find out soon!
