Admissions to all the AIIMS in India are allotted through the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) conducted every year. Candidates who have qualified the exam are eligible to apply for admissions to various AIIMS medical colleges across the country.
During the pandemic, India witnessed an acute shortage of inadequate medical resources and doctors. The government of India, under the Atma Nirbhar Bharat scheme, aims to develop the medical infrastructure of the country. The increase in the number of AIIMS in the country is to make medical education accessible to a large chunk of the population. AIIMS has both undergraduate and postgraduate courses for the candidates who are eligible.
The creation of the new AIIMS in Manipur was announced by the PM during a rally ahead of elections in Manipur. Earlier there was a discussion in the parliament to convert the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) to AIIMS.
