Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the newest addition to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Manipur. This makes the total number of AIIMS in India to 24. The medical college and hospital was constructed as part of the Atma Nirbhar Bharat scheme of the union government.
“We are also planning to build an AIIMS in Manipur, this is the time of Atmanirbhar Bharat. This decade is the decade of development and progress and Manipur is moving fast in this direction today,” said the PM.
At present, there are 23 AIIMS in India out of which 19 are fully functional and the rest are under construction. Established as an act of parliament in India in 1956, AIIMS are the premier medical colleges as well as medical institutions in India. The location and the status of all the AIIMS institutions are given in the table below.

Admissions to all the AIIMS in India are allotted through the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) conducted every year. Candidates who have qualified the exam are eligible to apply for admissions to various AIIMS medical colleges across the country.
During the pandemic, India witnessed an acute shortage of inadequate medical resources and doctors. The government of India, under the Atma Nirbhar Bharat scheme, aims to develop the medical infrastructure of the country. The increase in the number of AIIMS in the country is to make medical education accessible to a large chunk of the population. AIIMS has both undergraduate and postgraduate courses for the candidates who are eligible.
The creation of the new AIIMS in Manipur was announced by the PM during a rally ahead of elections in Manipur. Earlier there was a discussion in the parliament to convert the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) to AIIMS.
