MHT CET 2018 Syllabus to Modify; Level of CET to be Raised in Par With JEE

The Maharashtra Common Entrance Test will soon be introduced with few significant changes. DTE Maharashtra, the conducting body of MHT CET, is working on upgrading the syllabus of the examination. Apart from this, there have been speculations that the level of CET will be brought at par with the level of national entrance examinations like JEE and NEET.

The decision is assumed to be a fruitful one because now the students will follow only one syllabus but will be automatically preparing for CET, JEE, and NEET. The state-level common entrance exam is conducted for enrollment of students in the fields of technology and pharmacy.

Earlier the exam pattern of MHT CET was nowhere close to JEE and other national competitive exams. The syllabus of the exam was predominantly based on the HSC syllabus of Maharashtra State Board which was very different from that of the national level examinations. Hence, the students of Maharashtra students had to separate preparation for each competitive examination. This eventually led to increase in the level of anxiety and pressure.

The revamped syllabus would be applicable from the academic session 2018-19. Along with it, the exam pattern might also be changed. The enhanced level of the exam is also expected to raise the standard of questions asked in the exam.

The MHT CET exam consists of three questions papers of 100 marks each and the prescribed duration of the exam.The questions asked from the state board syllabus, which is very different from NCERT boundaries. The changes in the pattern are yet to be announced. However, it is expected that the nature of the questions will change to select the candidates worth of qualifying a national level examination. 7

The introduced changes are expected to favour the students in all the aspects. It might help the candidates to prepare efficiently for MHT CET and other competitive exams side-by-side but it is yet to be discovered whether it works in the favour of them as many experts and officials are sceptical about the approach. Some students are complaining that there is no clarity about the detailed structure as though CET would be on the lines of the JEE  or not.

Yet, the amendment is expected to increase the number of applications for the upcoming session. Earlier this year, the announcement pertaining to the removal of negative-marking scheme was made. The reason for such was the plea of parents sharing their concern about the exam pattern.

If the official announcement confirming the reports is not announced soon, the situation of chaos will be evoked. Aspirants will grow more anxious as the exam will come nearer. Few parents have also criticised the sudden decision to introduce the changes. They have raised  the questions as to why has the state government planned and informed about this few years in advance. In response, the officials at the department of higher and technical education are trying to seek clarity from the AICTE pertaining to the issue.

Approximately 3 lakh aspirants appeared for the MHT CET every year. The examination was earlier scrapped and the admissions were granted on the basis of JEE Main. However, the state decided to revive the examination again in 2016. The students of Maharashtra take the examination in hope to receive admission in engineering and pharmacy courses, offered by the colleges in the state.
