IIT Bombay has handed over the responsibility to organize GATE 2022 examination to IIT Kharagpur. This decision was taken in the National Coordination Board meeting where the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay has passed on the duty to organize the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) to IIT Kharagpur. It is expected that the newly announced conducting body will release the GATE 2022 Notification in July 2021.

GATE 2021 was conducted by IIT Bombay on February 06, 07, 13 and 14, 2021. Recently, the conducting body has released the GATE 2021 Scorecard and concluded the examination. In the National Coordination Board meeting, it was decided that the GATE exam for next year will be conducted by IIT Kharagpur. IIT Bombay while handing over the responsibility to IIT Kharagpur said that “IIT Bombay handed over the responsibility of organizing gate 2022 to IIT Kharagpur after successful completion of gate 2021 on schedule in spite of pandemic.” Now, Professor Virendra Kumar Tewari, Director of IIT Kharagpur is the new chairperson of the GATE 2022 examination.

Moreover, NCB has asked the new conducting body to explore some more exam centres in small towns. The Board has also asked to set up a committee that will help to find convenient test centres in small towns such as Shirdi, Latur, Akola, and Dhule. The decision was taken considering the increasing number of candidates appearing for the GATE exam every year. It will also help in organizing the entrance examination amidst coronavirus.

For the first time, the GATE exam was open for Arts and Commerce background students and this will continue for GATE 2022 as well. The Board has also decided in the meeting that 02 new papers will be introduced this year as well. Last year, IIT Bombay included subjects such as Environmental Science and Engineering and Humanities and Social Science. This year, the GATE exam will take place for 29 subjects in which 02 are newly added. These are Geomatics Engineering, and Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Prof Deepankar Choudhury added that after the demand from the shipping ministry, the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering subject was added as one of the papers.

As of now, IIT Kharagpur has not made an official announcement regarding the GATE 2022 Exam. However, the GATE 2022 Notification is most likely to be released in July 2021. Online registration for the entrance exam will commence from September 2021. The GATE 2022 Exam Date is expected to be February 2022. Albeit, aspirants should wait for the official announcement
