On Friday, a petition was filed against the grant of extra marks by IIT Madras to JEE Advanced 2017 entrants. The petition demands cancellation of the announced rank list and conducting of a fresh counselling. The petition was submitted to Supreme Court, which now seeks Center’s and IIT Madras, an explanation for awarding grace marks to even those candidates who did attempt the question.
JEE Advanced 2017 was held on May 21, 2017. The conducting body awarded 18 extra marks to the candidates after realizing the printing errors in the Hindi Language Section of the paper. IIT-M granted marks for two question in Paper 1 and three questions in Paper 2. In Paper 1, one question was from the Chemistry section whereas the other one was from the Mathematics sections. Whereas, from Paper 2, a question was from Physics sections and the remaining two questions from Mathematics section.
One might ask what is such a big deal about this? Well, there is a lot of catch. As per TOI reports, in 2016 and 2015 the IITs gave 1 bonus marks for each incorrect answer. Ditching the mechanism used so far, this year the marks have been granted according to the marking scheme of the respective Paper. In Paper 2, the marks per question were 4 and the negative marking of 1 mark is implemented. However, in Paper 1, the marking scheme varies as it contained questions with multiple correct choices. So, the marks per question in Paper 1 of the exam was 3 and were only allocated if all the correct answer choices opted. If the candidate chooses only a few correct choice answer option, then only 1 mark was to be allocated. Negative marking in this Paper was also of 2 marks.
The issue basically arises because all the candidates have been allocated extra marks, which are so high. Two qualifiers of JEE Advanced filed the petition, stating that their ranking in the merit list has been affected adversely. They further claim that due to this, they will not receive admission in prioritized course and colleges. Apart from this, the methodology for preparation of all-India rank list has also been sought with the marks awarded to candidates who had attempted the rights answers for these questions.
A vacation bench of Justice, headed by Abhay Manohar Sapre and Sanjay Kishan Kaul has demanded Centre and IIT-M clarification on the matter. The SC has given one week’s time to both the authority for submitting the response. The next hearing on the matter is due on July 07, 2017. Further, SC has also demanded interim stay on the merit and the counselling procedure.
SC has said that if only a certain number of students submitted objections again the discrepancy in the few questions. Then how can IIT Madras grant 18 marks to all the appearing candidates, irrespective of they have appeared for the exam or not? Even the petition also stated, “clearly arbitrary and violative of the rights of the candidates who successfully solved the said questions,”
Top 2.2 lakh JEE Main qualifiers were allowed to appear for JEE Advanced and out of these only 1.71 lakh candidates registered for the exam. The counselling for JEE Advanced 2017 has started and 11,000 candidates have got admission in seats offered by 23 IITs. Since the counselling for Advanced paper is held along JEE Main by JoSAA, the total number of candidates who got admission after the first allotment is 36,114 in 97 institutes.
The round 2 of JoSAA counselling will begin on July 04, 2017. Until July 07, 2017, the SC will not order hold the ongoing counselling procedure. However, only the time will tell where the case will take the turn. Do you think the bonus marks has affected the merit of the students? Is granting such high grace marks unfair? Tell us your thoughts in the comment section below.
its totally unfair. I attempted these 5 quesions correctly so I am not benefitted.
Totally unfair
This has affected the merit list a lot
Yes Definitely it has affected the ranking. Students 2 years of effort was drained by such a sort of easy, ambiguous questions and ultimately the bonus marks
Yes bonus marks really depressed the good one’s who are expecting better rank in jee and removed faith from Indian education system and its policy
It is not acceptable at all. First of all how it has happened to a question paper of such an important entrance examination where fate of lakhs of students are involved. I believe the setting of such question paper goes through numbers of quality controls – then how this has happened? That’s too for so many questions? If questions were so ambiguous then how the answer keys published by different reputed coaching institutes are same. How IIT Madras took the decision before reaction from the students are given? SC should cancel these bonus marks totally and direct IIT Madras to publish new ranks based on actual marks.
Providing marks to every Student is totally illegal & SC should make immediate stay order on ongoing counselling. Candidates had wasted lot of time on these question but it goes wasteless. I would like to request to SC to take strict action and provide marks only to those who had attempted the questions and wasted there time.
As i understand from this year JEE-Adv (IIT-M) results, qualified candidates may be less compared to last year in each category for example qualified candidate in 2016 were about 2200 in ST but this year IIT-M qualified only about 1800 ST candidates in rank list, Why? Not clear?
Rank list should be revised by IIT-M
There’s nothing wrong in providing grace marks.
When the questions are incorrect then how can someone attempt them correctly..
There is not everything to be think about bonus is correct for 11 marks but 7marks is not correct as in question paper was written if there is any discrepancy English version should be correct
Recounsilling will conducted by jossa by diducting grace marks
Rank list t should be revised or recounslling plz stop counsling procedure revised or give new other wise its cheat from students those who have attempted the question or lost time plz s.c judge panel stay councilling procedure
11 marks were for questions that had none of the correct answer listed. For which there is now way of ascertaining if a student had attempted and ticked a wrong answer or had attempted but having found none that matched the right answer skipped the question. I this case the institute either reduces total makes of total ie (363 – 11) or awards bonus marks to own. The result would be the same for all.
I case of the other 7 marks were due to wrong printing in hindi and all who gave in hindi got 7 marks extra. In this case people who gave exam in language other than hindi would be at a disadvantage. The Q is about the 7 marks awareded to all who wrote in hinid.
11 marks bonus had no correct options. So justice done in this part. In the 7 marks part, due to small typing error the questions in hindi are completely different from english. Student can answer both of them correctly but the problem starts here. How can we rank 2 students who are attempting 2 different question of different difficulty level. For eg the maths problem xcos(x+[x]) in english became cos(x+[x]) in hindi. The hindi version is very simple compared to english one. So the students of english version may appeal that the situation is an unfair one for them as hindi guys can easily score. So to give justice 7 marks have given bonus due to printing inconsistency not printing mistake.
no you are wrong. guys who wrote in hindi got 18 bonus marks but guys who wrote in english got only 11 bonus marks. the 7 marks bonus that hindi guys got due to error in question paper. this is the bone of contention.
It is a matter of shame for our nation, that the prestigious IIT ,Madras has played with the future of the students. Bonus marks should be given to only those students who had attempted the questions. But IIT Madras offered it to even those who didn’t even attempted it. This act is totally illegal and unfair. I wasted a lot of time in those ambigious questions and solved them. But those were declared as bonus. I m simply asking that can IIT Madras give me back that precious time , in which I could have solved some other questions correctly?
It is a big mistake committed by IIT Madras. And rectifications must be done in the rank list.
obviously the award of free 18 bonus marks to all have created a mess in the rank list. It is an injustice to those who attempted those wrong questions and got them right (even a partial answer). This has even eliminated many deserving candidates, who other wise would have been in the top 10000 club to get a guaranteed admission in any one of the IITS… It absolutely disappointing and in fact the Sc should have stayed the counselling procedure until this had been resolved
