GATE is an entrance examination, through which the candidates are selected for admission in M.Tech/M.E course. However, even the PSUs have started recruiting candidates on the basis of the examination. The exam is held in the month of January/February 2017, in a multiple days and session. The registration for it can only be done through GOAPS, which opens in the month of September/October.

Preparation for GATE exam has started quite some time back for most aspirants. It is an online examination, under which 23 disciplines are covered. The candidates are required to attempt the examination in 3 hours. In all, there will be 65 questions in the exam and will be a mixture of multiple choice type and numerical answer type questions. Candidates can only attempt GATE in computer based mode, with the assistance of the virtual calculator. Apart from the subject paper, the candidates will have to solve question on General Aptitude as well.

Last time IIT Guwahati conducted the exam, the pass percentage in GATE got stagnant at 14.23. It is very less in comparison to last years pass percentage, which was 16.1 percent. However, since 2010, the number of registration in GATE has also increased immensely. While only 4,60,541 candidates applied for the exam in 2010, the number of candidates applied in 2017 went above 9 lakh, which is the more than the double of the initial figure. From the table below, the candidates can see the evident rise in the number of applicants registered and appeared.

As far as the level of difficulty is concerned, GATE is a vast examination because of the number of paper it covers. From last year onwards, the total number of disciplines under it has increased to 23. Hence, the level of difficulty in each one of it varies. Yet, the trends state that despite the low pass percentage, the number of the questions are between moderate to difficult.

To select the candidates through GATE, IIT Guwahati will determine cutoff for each branch. Most sought branches are EC, CE, EE, ME, and CS. The cutoff for these go as high as 25.00, 28.70, 25.20, 32.87, 25, respectively. For the SC/ST/PH category, it is a little lower, upto 16.60, 19.10, 16.70, 21.00 and 16.60, respectively.

One reason for increase in the number of candidates is that even the Public Sectors recruit candidates through GATE. The recruitment is generally done on the basis of the normalized score in the exam. However, few PSUs also consider total score for the same purpose. Last year, BSNL announced 2510 recruitment through GATE, making itself one of the major recruiter through GATE. Candidates also seek jobs in ONGC, NCL, GAIL, NTPC etc.

Just like the conducting body, the recruiting body will also determine a cutoff. On the basis of that cutoff, the applicants will be shortlisted for group discussion and personal interview round. Only those candidates will be recruited, who will perform well in the exam, as well as the interview round.

Ineligible candidates are neither granted admission or recruited. It should also be noted that the apart from GATE eligibility criteria, the candidates might also have fulfil additional eligibility criteria for a college or PSU. Stay with us and keep on visiting for all the updates on GATE 2017.
