IITs increase M.Tech Fees
Close on the heels of conducting the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), premier institutes of the nation, have taken some big steps.
In the recently held meeting of the IIT Council, the apex body has decided to bring M.Tech fees at par with that of B.Tech fee amount. This means that the M.Tech fee amount shall be increased by as much as 10 times, to around 2 lakh.
However the body has said that this fee will not be applicable on an immediate basis. It will be implemented in a staggered manner over three years.
The present tuition fee amount varies between Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000. As per the council, the cost of education is to the tune of around Rs 7 lakh, thus making even Rs 2 lakh largely subsidized.
M.Tech Stipend To Be Stopped
Another major decision regarding M.Tech students was to stop the Rs 12,400 stipend. This stipend was given to candidates who took admission through GATE. In the year 2019, around 9,280 admissions out of 12,000 were through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering only.
Final decisions on when, and how to implement these changes will be announced in some time. These decisions may impact the choice of many candidates to opt for IITs through GATE, though the options of NITs, IIITs, CFTIs M.Tech admission as well as PSU recruitment through GATE 2020 still remain lucrative options for GATE aspirants.
