GATE 2020

IIT Delhi has extended the last date to apply with increased fee amount by five days to October 5. Earlier it was October 1. Candidates can submit GATE 2020 application form with normal fee amount until tonight, midnight only.

After the application form submission window with normal fee closes tonight, the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) website appsgate.iitd.ac.in will be down for scheduled maintenance from 00:15 to 00:30 hrs, informs IITD.

Once the fifteen minutes window when certain changes will be made to the site, it will be back up live again and candidates can access the registration and login page.

Immediately after that down time, increased fee amount shall apply. The new application fee for SC, ST, PWD, and all female candidates will be Rs 1,250, and for all others (applying for centers within India) it will be Rs 2,000. Candidates who will apply for centers outside India, will have to pay USD 70 for Addis Ababa, Colombo, Dhaka, Kathmandu, USD 120 for Dubai, Singapore.

In essence the fee amount hikes by Rs 500 for Indian centers and USD 20 for outside India centers. However IITD has made another important announcement.

The candidates opting Srinagar centre and paying fee during extended period will be refunded Rs 500 later.

The above message has been updated on the website gate.iitd.ac.in.

It may be noted that there will be no further extensions to applying for GATE 2020 with normal fees. The deadline for that remains final, as tonight.

IITs increase M.Tech Fees

Close on the heels of conducting the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), premier institutes of the nation, have taken some big steps.

In the recently held meeting of the IIT Council, the apex body has decided to bring M.Tech fees at par with that of B.Tech fee amount. This means that the M.Tech fee amount shall be increased by as much as 10 times, to around 2 lakh.

However the body has said that this fee will not be applicable on an immediate basis. It will be implemented in a staggered manner over three years.

The present tuition fee amount varies between Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000. As per the council, the cost of education is to the tune of around Rs 7 lakh, thus making even Rs 2 lakh largely subsidized.

M.Tech Stipend To Be Stopped

Another major decision regarding M.Tech students was to stop the Rs 12,400 stipend. This stipend was given to candidates who took admission through GATE. In the year 2019, around 9,280 admissions out of 12,000 were through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering only.

Final decisions on when, and how to implement these changes will be announced in some time. These decisions may impact the choice of many candidates to opt for IITs through GATE, though the options of NITs, IIITs, CFTIs M.Tech admission as well as PSU recruitment through GATE 2020 still remain lucrative options for GATE aspirants.
