Following the footsteps of IIT-R, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has announced dates for GATE 2018 earlier than expected. The official website for the upcoming Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2018 is gate.iitg.ac.in. It became functional today, on July 04, 2017. The Chairman of GATE 2018 will be Prof. G. Pugazhenthi, a Chemical Engineering professor working since 2015 in IIT-G.
So far, only the important date and few other details for GATE has been announced. According to released information, the exam will be held on February 03, 04, 10, and 11, 2017. The candidates interested will be able to apply through the GOAPS from September 01 to October 05, 2017. The conducting body will also provide the facility for correction, until November 12, 2017, and the issuance of admit card will begin from January 05, 2018.
As always, for registration, the GATE Online Application Process System will be made functional. To apply, the candidates will first have to register by submitting email id, phone number, name etc. Then fill details in the application form, followed by uploading of required documents and eventually end the application process by submitting the application fee.
The application fee for the exam, since last two years, is Rs. 1500 for the male candidate of UR and OBC category. For female and SC/ST candidates, the fee amount has been 750 and for the international aspirants, it is US$ 50. The chances rise of the fee of the exam is fifty-fifty. However, for sure the mode of payment will remain online gateway and e-challan.
Information Brochure, advertisement, notice etc will be provided in due course of time. Yet, IIT Guwahati (GATE 2018 organizing body) has announced the eligibility criteria for the examination. There is no age bar and the minimum education qualification required is graduation. However, for each course, the layers of eligibility do varies.
GATE 2018 will be a Computer Based Examination. Under it, 23 paper of engineering will be held. However, the candidate will be required to apply for the subject paper of their choice. More than 9 lakh candidates register for the exam every year. However, the pass percentage remains near 14 to 16 percent.
The result of GATE will also be announced through the GOAPS. Proposed date for the announcement of it is March 17, 2018. Candidates who will qualify the examination will be called for the counselling round. The IITs will conduct individual counselling for admission. However, the admission in NITs will be granted through a common counselling platform, CCMT.
The CCMT counselling will begin in the month of April 2018. Last year, 40 NITs participate in it but looking at the previous year trends one can easily estimate the figure be higher this year. The most sought branches are EC, EE, CE, ME, and CS. Apart from these, the huge number of candidates also apply for IN, CH, and BT paper.
The cutoff for EC goes upto 25 for general category and 16.60 for SC/ST/PwD category. Whereas, last year the cutoff for CE, EE, ME, and CS streams was observed as 28.70, 25.20, 32.87, and 25, respectively. For these streams, the reserved category cutoff last year was 25.8, 25.20, 29, and 22.50.
Through GATE, the candidates are also recruited for PSU Jobs. The Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) started recruiting GATE qualifiers from 2012. Since then, the demand and popularity of PSU Recruitment through GATE has immensely increased. Now, more than 40 PSUs participate in the recruitment process and offer jobs as JTO, JE, AE etc.
For recruitment, some PSU’s consider the score of GATE. While some use the normalized score. However, all the PSU call candidate for the interview round and then make the final decision.
